Within the coastal city of Biloxi, you’ll find one of the oldest homes in the entire country. The historic home was constructed in the 1700s when the French occupied the Gulf Coast. By the 1960s, the home had been transformed into the renowned restaurant Mary Mahoney’s and became lovingly known as the Old French House.
The “magnificently French” home was built in 1737 by French colonist Louis Frasier and included traditional characteristics, such as high ceilings.
Hand-made bricks and wooden pegged cypress columns were among the materials used by Frasier.
Although records are scarce, it is known that the home remained in the Frasier family until 1820. Subsequent residents of the home were of varied descents as the colony came under French, Spanish, German, and English influence over the course of time.
At one point, the home served as headquarters for Governor Jean Baptiste Bienville. In fact, he commanded the entire Louisiana Territory from the historic home.
In the 1960s, the Old French House was purchased by Bob and Mary Mahoney and Mary’s brother Andrew Cvitanovich.
While transforming the home into a restaurant, great care was taken to preserve the structure, which features exposed brick walls, heart-pine floors, and open fireplaces.
Over the years, Mary Mahoney’s has garnered a reputation for its amazing fare that includes seafood, steaks, and French cuisine - all of which can be enjoyed in one of the many dining rooms or the courtyard.
It’s not only locals that love the food at Mary Mahoney’s. The restaurant has been nationally recognized as well as visited by presidents, celebrities, and dignitaries.
