There are lots of historic places with resident ghosts in Mississippi. The Vicksburg National Military Park is probably the first that comes to mind. However, it’s just one of the sites in the state both history buffs and ghost hunters will love. Friendship Cemetery is another state locale that’s equal parts historic and haunted.
It’s hard to say what Friendship Cemetery in Columbus is most known for – its legends and lore or its historical significance.
Founded in 1849, it’s among the state’s oldest burial grounds.
The sprawling cemetery is the final resting place of local citizens as well as the nearly 3,000 soldiers who perished in the 1862 Battle of Shiloh.
The identity of a majority of the soldiers buried in Friendship Cemetery remains a mystery to this day.
Over the years, visitors to the graveyard have reported seeing ghosts of Civil War soldiers, walking or standing among the tombstones.
Visitors have also had some interesting things to say about the cemetery’s Weeping Angel statue.
Those who've visited the graveyard claim that, when touched, the angel’s hand has a life-like feel.
The teary-eyed angel isn’t the cemetery’s only statue of interest, though.
There are quite a few markers that are sure to intrigue history buffs, including the grave of Mrs. Canant, the only Confederate nurse officially recognized by the U.S. government, as well as the Decoration Day marker.
One May day in 1866, several women went to Friendship Cemetery and decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers.
The celebration is touted as the first Decoration Day, which would later come to be known as Memorial Day.
Like most cemeteries, Friendship Cemetery is open to the public.
However, if you’d prefer a guided tour to a self-guided tour, you’ll have to plan your visit accordingly, as tours are only offered on select dates throughout the year.
