One of the coldest winters in Mississippi occurred back in 1989, when temperatures remained in the single digits for a few days in a row. Mississippi wasn’t alone, though. Several states throughout the Southeast (including Florida!) were affected by the winter storm, which would come to be known as the Christmas Coastal Snowstorm of 1989.
The Christmas Coastal Snowstorm struck the Southeast U.S. on December 22-24, 1989. To this day, it remains one of the largest snowstorms in history to hit the region.
The 3-day arctic outbreak shattered records throughout the U.S., Mississippi included.
In Jackson, the storm is often referred to as the “Freeze of 1989,” since the city experienced subzero temperatures for several nights in a row.
On December 22, the temperature in the capital city dropped to 7 degrees. The next night, 4 degrees, and on December 24, it was 6 degrees.
Jackson wasn’t the only Mississippi city to experience record-breaking temps, though. In Tupelo, the temperature dropped to -3 degrees, and in Greenville, the temperature lingered near 0 degrees for a few nights.
Aside from unprecedentedly cold temperatures, the Christmas Coastal Snowstorm brought with it immense amounts of snow.
Pummeling a majority of the region with snow, the storm broke all-time snowfall records in several states.
It even snowed in Florida! Measurable amounts fell in Tallahassee and Jacksonville, whereas snow flurries were spotted near Sarasota and in Tampa.
