And while it’s now one of the most recognizable drinks in the nation, it had to start somewhere and that somewhere is an unassuming little house in Biloxi. One of the world’s most famous soft drinks, Barq’s Root Beer can have only one birthplace – and it’s Biloxi.
More specifically, the carbonated creation was invented in a small, unassuming home on Keller Avenue.
Still standing, the historic structure was built around 1898.
An informational sign out front indicates the building's significance – otherwise, you might not give it a second look.
Edward Barq, Sr. constructed the building to house his bottling company, Biloxi Artesian Bottle Works. Once construction was complete, he began experimenting with formulas for an array of soft drinks and eventually developed the recipe for his now-famous root beer.
Practically an instant hit, Barq’s Root Beer went on to become the country's number one favorite soft drink.
Barq’s Root Beer was produced in the small building on Keller Avenue until 1937, at which time production relocated to Biloxi’s Lameuse Street.
