Many believe the mark of progress in a city depends on development and modernization of the city itself. While we appreciate much of the modern world, we sometimes feel nostalgic for the past and its aesthetic. Here are six of the most retro and groovy places in Minneapolis that will take you back in time:
1. Murray's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge
If you want to talk about old school Minneapolis, you have to talk about Murray's. The restaurant is known for its "Silver Butter Knife steak," a steak so tender, it can be cut merely with a butter knife, and has been serving up the classics to Minneapolis since 1954. Murray's, 26 S 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55402.
2. Rewind Vintage
Rewind is a vintage shop in Northeast Minneapolis that specializes in selling goods from the 1970s and 1980s. Whether you want your look to say "groovy," or you want to look like you're straight out of Flash Dance, this shop has something for you. Rewind Vintage, 2852 Johnson St NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418.
3. Bryant-Lake Bowl
Bowling alleys are synonymous with retro. Minneapolis is lucky to have the raddest one around in the Bryant-Lake neighborhood. Grab your bowling shoes, enjoy a cocktail or two, or view a film, all within the same building. Bryant-Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55408.
4. Monte Carlo
While the trendy and bustling neighborhood of North Loop grows around it, The Monte Carlo remains the same. The Minneapolis staple since 1906 is one of the oldest restaurants in the city and seems to be here to stay. If you want to enter a world of the past, Monte Carlo's neon retro sign is the beginning of your adventure. The Monte Carlo 219 3rd Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55401.
5. Via's Vintage Wear For Men and Women
Hoping to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn or Cary Grant? Via's Vintage is the place to be. The pink themed vintage shop is chock full of clothing from the 1950s and beyond. This store reminds us of the beautiful aesthetic of the past. Via's Vintage, 2408 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55405.
6. Pracna on Main
Founded around 1890, Pracna on Main is Minneapolis' oldest restaurant. It's tucked away on Minneapolis' scenic historic Main Street, and is often forgotten about with the trendier Aster Cafe and Jefe: Urban Hacienda located nearby. This place is all retro and is a significant part of our city's history. Pracna, 117 SE Main St, Minneapolis, MN 55414.
