Despite the uncertainty of life in the Great Lakes State these days, we can take comfort in the fact that difficult times don’t last forever. Michiganders are some of the most resilient people around, and our dedication to the people and things we care about never wavers. While we might find ourselves stuck inside for the time being, here are nine things we’ll never take for granted again once normalcy resumes.
1. Hangouts at the beach
If you’re like us, you’re looking forward to your next day of beachfront lounging with family and friends. There’s nothing better than loading up the car, slathering on the sunscreen, and splashing in the waves of Lake Michigan on a hot summer afternoon. Never again will we take for granted the ability to enjoy a day of waterfront fun on a moment’s notice - followed by a stop for ice cream, of course!
2. Dining out
We Michiganders sure do love to eat. While we’re grateful for the carryout and delivery services that remain available during these difficult times, we can’t help but miss the experience of settling in with loved ones at our favorite restaurant. In the future, we’ll make sure to appreciate the privilege of flipping through a menu and sipping drinks while catching up with longtime pals.
3. Sporting events
Whether you’re a fan of the Tigers, the Lions, the Pistons, the Red Wings, a college team, or a combination of these, there’s no denying that Michigan residents love sports. With the recent cancellation of so many large-scale gatherings, many of us are left longing for the camaraderie of a sporting event. Those first post-virus sports games promise to be filled with ample celebration and cheer.
4. Fun-filled festivals
The present circumstances have led to the cancellation of many beloved annual festivals throughout the Great Lakes State, including St. Patrick’s Day gatherings and Holland’s vibrant Tulip Time celebration. When these events are back on the docket next year, you can be sure that attendees will be even more grateful than usual to enjoy timeless traditions in the Great Lakes State.
5. Exploring our favorite downtown areas
Whether you live in Ann Arbor, South Haven, Traverse City, Sault Ste. Marie, or somewhere in between, you know that downtown is often the place to be. Our state is home to some of the quaintest, most charming shopping districts imaginable, and we’re looking forward to returning to our favorite local boutiques and specialty stores. Supporting small businesses is just what Michiganders do.
6. Drinking Michigan-made beer
For many, the arrival of spring means the arrival of patio season on breweries throughout the state. Those of us who consider ourselves major fans of Michigan-brewed beer are likely missing the chance to head out and indulge in brews from New Holland, Bell’s, Short’s Brewing, and others. We’re grateful that some of our favorites are available to enjoy at home, but there’s nothing like an in-person tasting session.
7. Days up north
As warm temperatures arrive, it’s tough to resist the urge to head north and start making new memories at family cottages or campgrounds. When the rules of social distancing no longer apply, we’ll surely find happiness in venturing up north to gather for cookouts, boating adventures, fishing trips, and group hikes with our favorite adventure buddies.
8. Family outings
It’s no secret that Michigan is home to some of the most awesome day trip destinations in the country. When this tough time is behind us, we’ll give extra appreciation to places like hands-on museums, movie theaters, bakeries, arcades, and other unique locales where families can make lasting memories. There’s nothing better than exploring something new and unexpected.
9. Each other
Most of the items on our list have one thing in common: they’re best enjoyed in the company of others. At the end of the day, the presence of our loved ones outweighs all else as we consider what’s most important to us during these trying times. In the months and years to come, many Michiganders will discover a renewed appreciation for spending time with family, friends, and loved ones.
We’d like to hear from you: are there any other elements of life in Michigan that you’ll never take for granted again? Additionally, are there any small businesses throughout the state that we should help support by featuring in a future article? Share your recommendations with us here!
