Whether you’re a fan of the Wolverines or the Spartans, there’s no denying that University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has a truly beautiful campus. The university’s long history, top-notch academics, and stunning architecture make it an ideal place to explore and appreciate, no matter what the season. There’s one particular location on Michigan’s campus that continually amazes visitors with its beauty, history, and grandeur: the Law Quad.
The William W. Cook Law Quadrangle, known more affectionally as "the Law Quad," is the place to be for law students attending the University of Michigan. It contains housing for aspiring lawyers, classrooms, and a breathtaking library.
The Law Quad was dedicated on the 15th of June, 1934, with a whole slew of high-ranking speakers in attendance. These important guests included members of the United States Supreme Court, the University president, and a former United States Secretary of War.
Throughout the years, students and visitors alike have been stunned by the Gothic style architecture and towering stone buildings of the Quad. On a sunny day, there’s no better place to embrace your inner academic and sprawl out in the grassy courtyard. Students often take advantage of the Law Quad as an ideal spot to toss around the frisbee between classes.
Once you’ve taken in the beauty of the buildings’ exterior, step inside the Reading Room, known more commonly as the Law Library. Few sights on Michigan’s campus are more breathtaking — chandeliers hang from the ceiling and the sturdy wood walls are lined with books. But don’t make a peep: there is a strict silence policy in this library.
Harry Potter fans will be thrilled by the fact that the Law Quad was actually considered by filmmakers as a location that could portray Hogwarts: the only spot scouted in North America. It’s certainly easy to imagine Quidditch players zooming about wildly above the Law Library.
The Law Quad has also become a popular locale for wedding and engagement photos. In-love Michigan alumni pose for portraits under the intricate stone archways and towering trees. Few photo locations could be more striking than this.
So if you’re looking to step back in time, imagine your future as a lawyer-in-training, or embrace your inner Hogwarts student, make a visit to the Law Quad. You’ll swear you’ve entered another world — but it’s just another one-of-a-kind location right here in the Great Lakes State.
