There is so much rich history within the state of Michigan that it’s hard to pinpoint where to begin. If you’re a history buff like us, then you probably like to start with the towns that offer the most bang for your buck. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most historic Michigan towns, perfect for a weekend of exploration, adventure, and of course, history!
1. Charlevoix, Michigan
With a population of fewer than 2,500 residents, Charlevoix, Michigan is a delightful spot smack dab on the shores of Lake Michigan, Lake Charlevoix, and Round Lake. What lends to the history of this beautiful place is the fact that the town was founded back in 1878, however, it was originally part of what was called the Michilimackinac, formed in the Treaty of Washington in 1836. It is also said that the French explorer Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix is whom the town is named after.
2. Tecumseh, Michigan
The reason why Tecumseh, Michigan is one of the most historic spots in the state is that it’s one of the very first pioneer settlements in the Michigan Territory! Tecumseh was also the first settlement in Lenawee County back in May of 1824. Named after the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, this town is a coveted place that represents how far Michigan has grown over the years.
3. St. Joseph, Michigan
This west coast town is nicknamed "The Riviera of the Midwest." Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, you’ll be waterfront for this delightful town. One of the coolest historical elements of St. Joseph, Michigan involves the lighthouses, dating back to the early 1900s. As one of the coolest beach towns in the state, this coastal gem also packs a punch in terms of history and landmarks.
4. Frankenmuth, Michigan
Frankenmuth, Michigan is a fun vacation destination that is known for its Bavarian-style architecture and German roots. Nicknamed Michigan’s Little Bavaria, this small town is one of the best travel destinations in the state. Known for throwing festivals and world-famous chicken dinners, this iconic town is really one of the most exciting spots in the state. Originally settled back in 1845, Frankenmuth has since expanded, becoming one of the premier destinations in the state.
