Are you craving a dose of adventure mixed in with an eerie vibe and plenty of natural beauty? We’ve got just the spot. While many of Michigan’s most historic towns are still thriving, others have nearly disappeared into the surroundings where they once stood. One such ghost town can be found among the foliage in a lush Michigan forest - and you’ll want to explore it for yourself.
Besser Natural Area sits just off the coast of Lake Huron in Presque Isle County.
While it’s decidedly small in size, the history and beauty of this recreation area can’t be overstated. In addition to plenty of outdoor delights, the park boasts an intriguing past.
Many folks visit Besser for the chance to hike and bask in the fresh air, while others drop by to explore its most fascinating feature: the remnants of a bonafide ghost town.
Founded in the early 1880s, the town of Bell grew in conjunction with the local lumber industry. When its post office closed in 1911, though, the town was quickly abandoned.
Today, visitors can check out the few remaining pieces of Bell. The wooded hike extends for approximately 1.5 miles, winding through gorgeous trees and foliage galore.
When you reach the ghost town, you’ll find the ruins of a once-alive little village, complete with walls from the community’s general store and a towering stone chimney.
There are even bits of houses and a cemetery where the remains of villagers now rest. You might just feel a sense of eerie emptiness as you explore the area.
Whether you’re a history buff, a believer in the supernatural legends that accompany ghost towns, or a mere explorer seeking a new outing, this spot will capture your imagination.
