With winter approaching, so does the cold weather, stiff joints, and flu season. While there are plenty of doctor's offices around the state, where do you go when you have a more serious ailment? U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the top hospitals in the nation, as well as the best regional hospitals. There are 15 health facilities in Maryland that outranked the rest in the state. Here they are (with a few ties).
1. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
This hospital ranked 4th in the entire nation, which is an impressive feat, indeed. Folks know there's no place better in the area than Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
2. University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore
#2 on the list ranks extremely high when it comes to adult specialties. Particularly, cancer treatment.
3. Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore
This medical center receives impressive ratings for adult specialties, especially orthopedics.
Tied for #3: Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Baltimore
Tied with Mercy Medical Center, Sinai of Baltimore ranks nationally when it comes to neurology and neurosurgery. The skilled neurosurgeons here can't be beat.
5. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton
This is another hospital that ranks high in neurology and neurosurgery. Rest assured, you're well taken care of here.
6. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore
This hospital is high ranking in a few specialties, including gastroenterology and GI surgery. When it comes to your gut, don't choose anything but.
Tied for #6. University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson
Tied with Medstar Union Memorial, this general medical hospital and surgical center has an all-around positive reputation. It scores extremely high in patient safety.
8. Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis
This Annapolis hospital is a superb general medical center and surgical facility. It's high-performing in cardiac disease.
9. MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Baltimore
High-rated specialties here include diabetes treatment and endocrinology. This general hospital is a go-to for many locals.
10. MedStar Harbor Hospital, Baltimore
This facility scores high in patient safety. Exceptional specialties here include gynecology and pulmonology.
11. MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore
This hospital's highest performing specialty is nephrology, although there are several others. As with all other MedStar facilities on this list, this is a place that people trust.
Tied for #11. Suburban Hospital, Bethesda
Bethesda wiggles into this list with the acclaimed Suburban Hospital. This general medical and surgical hospital is high performing in ear, nose, and throat treatment.

13. Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), Baltimore
GBMC is a highly-ranked general medical facility. It's smaller in size, but big on patient care.
Tied for #13. Johns Hopkins Bayview, Baltimore
This hospital has several areas of specialty, ranking highest in diabetes & endocrinology, and neophrology. They also perform a number of common procedures each year with ease.
Tied for #13. University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton, Easton
This general hospital also performs inpatient and outpatient surgeries. A wide array of specialties are covered, so you can feel safe coming here for your needs.
