Let's get one thing straight: If there's anyone in the United States who understands the definition of the word "frigid," it's those of us located in the northeastern U.S. And it really does get quite cold - often, statewide high temperatures don't even reach freezing, choosing to hover around 25 degrees in the warmest, southernmost portions of the state. In the north, we're lucky see 15 degrees as a high on some days (especially in January). So, what are the 2023-2024 winter predictions for Maine? What do we have in store? While it's never truly possible to forecast accurately beyond, say, about 72 hours, the Farmers' Almanac uses its own formulas to figure out what might just transpire this season.
The Farmers' Almanac is definitely old-school, and it should be taken with a grain of salt... but it sure is fun to see just how true its predictions end up becoming!
This year, you might be surprised to hear it's expected to be absolutely frigid, and if this is the case, welcome - you must be new here.
The Almanac does acknowledge that cold and snowy isn't out of the norm for this part of the world, but unfortunately, this winter it calls for a little extra.
For the 2023/2024 winter season, it predicts we'll see higher-than-average snowfall and lower-than-average temperatures, which is either wonderful or dreadful, depending on how you see it.
Potential certainly exists for two or more winter weather events, like blizzards, to occur - they say it ought to be in January, and perhaps again in March.
This makes sense, considering January is by far the coldest month of the year.
But don't let any of this stop you from enjoying the beauty of winter in Maine.
Seriously, if you bundle up properly, the cold is much less of a problem - and has much more potential to be fun! There are lots of things to do in Maine during the winter, of course, so you'll never be bored.
You can, for example, embark upon some of the best winter hikes in Maine if you're up for the adventure. Alternatively, there are so many amazingly beautiful places in Maine that are especially jaw-dropping in the winter.
