Where do you call home? For me, I’ve lived in Louisiana for most of my life. I grew up in Covington, went to LSU, and eventually found a home in New Orleans. Whether you’ve lived here your entire life or fell in love with the Bayou State after visiting, Louisiana has a way of sneaking into your heart. If you have roots in Louisiana, then you’ll easily connect with this article. Heck, you may even want to check out the Wear Your Roots brand to represent Louisiana with some snazzy new clothes.
1. You have a “gumbo pot”.
If you have roots in Louisiana, you absolutely have an arsenal of cookware and endless recipes to cook up with them. Bonus points if they are family recipes! We all have that one special gumbo pot that we break out for the first cold snap of the season. And there’s no better sights (or smells) than the first gumbo of the year.
2. You have a strong preference on where to stand during Mardi Gras parades.
This one is specific to New Orleans, but it’s a big deal. Are you on team neutral ground or team sidewalk? I’m team sidewalk.
3. Speaking of Mardi Gras, your favorite part of Mardi Gras is getting to restock your go-cup collection.
Even just having a go-cup collection is very revealing that you have roots in Louisiana. But we all have a reserved section in our cupboards for Mardi Gras cups.

4. You know where to find the best po’boys.
The beauty of this one is that everyone has a different answer for this, and no one is wrong! My favorite po’boys is a roast beef po’boy, dressed, no tomatoes, from Bear’s in Covington, Louisiana. I’ve been eating there since I was a kid and I always make time to swing by whenever I’m on the Northshore.
5. Your spice cabinet is off the charts.
Maybe some Zatarain’s, maybe some Slap Ya Mama... of course you’ve got a few different bottles of hot sauce... not to mention your own special spice blend you spent a long time perfecting.
6. You have at least three favorite football teams.
Your high school football team, college, and NFL. Thankfully, they all play on different days. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you’ve graduated from high school, you’ll always cheer them on. Especially when you see the band march in a parade!
7. You know what this picture smells like.
And now you’re craving some. Soon, y’all!
8. You measure distance in time and/or landmarks.
Just head towards the river until you get to the church with the giant crawfish, take a left, and I’m about five minutes past the huge azalea bush.
Ok, Magellan.
9. You’re well aware how easy it is to have all four seasons in one day.
You may start the day in a jacket, but you’re ending it in flip flops.
10. You’ve described a color as “K&B Purple.”
I’m showing my age here, but I feel like y’all have my back on this one. Bonus point if you also remember what K&B smelled like!
This list could go on forever, but I’ll keep it at 10 for now. Check out the Wear Your Roots website to stock up on new gear to represent your state with pride. You'll even get a 10% discount if you use the code Louisiana10 at checkout!
