New Orleanians have their own lingo, that's for sure. Part of what makes our city so special is all the phrases and words that are unique to our area. Even some of our street names will confuse the average tourist (Burgundy and Calliope come to mind). But if you've lived in New Orleans for any amount of time, you're sure to recognize these NOLA phrases that just about every New Orleanian has said at some point.
1. Dressed
No, this doesn’t refer to your clothing. It’s what you say when ordering your po’boy, if you want lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayo! If you want to talk like a NOLA local while ordering your po'boy, this is the phrase to use.
2. Beaucoup
Beaucoup is one of my favorite NOLA phrases. Pronounced "boo-coo", it means to have a lot of something.
"There were beaucoup people at the parade."
3. Lagniappe
Just a little something extra. If you get a free sample with your purchase, the free sample would be lagniappe.
4. Neutral Ground
While everyone else calls that grassy strip in the middle of the road a median, we prefer the term neutral ground. During Mardi Gras season, locals have a preference for where they stand to watch the parade--Neutral ground side or sidewalk side. Team sidewalk side for life!
5. Cher
No, not that Cher. You’ll hear people say "cher" as a term of affection meaning "dear" or "love" down in NOLA. It's pronounced closer to "sha" and although you'll hear it every now and then around New Orleans, it's more common in Cajun Country or areas of Louisiana where Louisiana French is more frequently spoken.
6. Fais do-do
A Cajun dance party that takes place after the kids have gone to sleep. This is another phrase that's more common in Cajun Country, but you might hear it every now and then in New Orleans!
7. Makin’ Groceries
Going to the grocery store.
"Where y’at, Cher?"
"I’m fixin’ to make groceries."
8. Best Bank
If you hear anyone say this, they are probably from the West Bank. One of the many funny things about living in NOLA is that there is a sibling rivalry with New Orleans and the West Bank. If you hear someone say that the West Bank is the Best Bank, it probably won't be long until someone shouts out "worst bank."
We love you, West Bank. Don't pay them any attention.
9. Po’boy
It’s not a grinder, a sub, or a hoagie… It’s a po’boy. This is not up for debate.
10. Gris-Gris
A little bag, trinket, or amulet used to bring positive influences like love, health, good luck, or to ward off evil. Of course, it can also be used for malevolent purposes too.
11. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler
Perhaps one of the most popular NOLA phrases, this one means "let the good times roll!" After all, New Orleans is all about passing a good time.
