America’s favorite fast food item, the cheeseburger, is said to have been invented at Kaelin’s Restaurant right here in Kentucky in 1934! Unfortunately, they didn’t patent it and Humpty Dumpty’s beat them to the chase.
2. Kentucky governors must swear an oath that they've never dueled.
There is still a law on the books stating that governors in Kentucky must swear an oath that they have never taken part in a duel with deadly weapons.
3. Kentucky's home to the first city built in a crater.
Middlesboro is the only city in America to be built in a meteor crater. We always knew the place was stellar!
4. Our most famous racehorse never raced here.
Kentucky is famous for horse racing, and one of the most famous horses was Man o’ War. Yet, this horse never ran a race in the state of Kentucky!
5. Spirits are as popular as horse racing.
Fans of the Kentucky Derby don’t just love horses. They love a good tipple. A Derby crowd will generally consume 7,000 liters of Bourbon and 120,000 mint juleps!
6. There are more bourbon barrels in Kentucky than people.
Speaking of bourbon, did you know that there are more bourbon barrels than people in Kentucky? For every resident, there are at least two barrels!
7. We have the most fertile soil in the nation.
Kentucky has some of the most fertile soil in America. "Progressive Farmer" magazine once called the Bluegrass State "rural America’s best place to live."
8. Two words: traffic lights.
Motorists all over the world owe their safety to a former slave named Garrett Morgan from Paris, Kentucky, who invented the traffic light.
9. Mother's Day was created in Kentucky.
Henderson, Kentucky’s own Mary Towles Sasseen created the Mother’s Day holiday in honor of her own mother, and the first celebration was in Henderson in 1887.
10. We almost had the capital of America right here in Kentucky.
The small town of Richmond, just outside of Louisville, very nearly became the nation’s capital. Its lack of seaports was what gave the nod to Washington D.C., however.
