Kentucky's character comes from its residents, its history, its beautiful landscapes, and of course those quirks that make the Bluegrass State what it is. Like with any state, Kentucky is home to some quirky and peculiar places, many of which you probably never knew existed. If you've ever driven through a place and glanced at a road sign that had a strange Kentucky town name on it, perhaps it was Hell for Certain in eastern Kentucky. While this name may be laugh-out-loud funny, it's one of many town names that have raised eyebrows over the years, and also a name that is typically known only by the locals.
Hell for Certain, also known as Dryhill on most maps, is a tiny town in eastern Kentucky that sits on a creek of the same name. No one knows for sure why it's called this strange name, but some say that when a visitor returned home and was asked about the Kentucky town, he responded it was "hell for certain."
No matter where this came from, it seems to have stuck as the creek that flows through the area and the road alongside it still have that name. It's one of many tiny towns in Leslie County, an area that has seen some dark times over the years.
The Hurricane Creek mine disaster that took place in 1970 still has deep roots in the area today. But aside from a memorable name, this town is much like others in the area.
As you can imagine, this town name does get some attention from time to time, including a feature on the Weather Channel. Many locals have researched this town and its history and you can read a wonderful piece about Hell for Certain on this Kentucky-themed blog.
Some local businesses have also brought attention to the strangest Kentucky town name by naming products after it. Bluegrass Brewing Company once named a beer after the town and many shops have created Hell for Certain, Kentucky wares.
