Every state has something special originating in, or found in their state. Kentucky has some amazing things, unique only to the Bluegrass. It is not the blue grass, as our grass is just as green as the next states. However, we do have a very impressive array of attributes.
Here are 10 things especially unique to Kentucky, or at least originating in the Bluegrass State:
10. The Appalachian Blue People are real. The bluish skin coloring was due to a recessive gene called methemoglobinemia, caused by genetic defects. It continued to be passed down the family line.
9. Middlesboro Kentucky is the only city in the US built in a meteor crater. It is also home to the oldest 9 hole golf course and country club, opened in 1889.
8.The Arnold Palmer drink is a favorite of Kentuckians, created with half sweet tea and half lemonade poured over ice.
7. Bluegrass Brewing Company is Louisville’s craft brewery, offering a variety of home, specialty and seasonal brews. Their motto is, “Beer is food”.
6. The incredibly beautiful Cumberland Falls is known as the Niagara of the South.
5. Kentucky is the origin of Kentucky Fried Chicken, along with the birthplace and resting place of Colonel Sanders, founder of KFC.
4. Mammoth Cave opened for business in 1886 and is the largest cave system in the US.
3. Thunder over Louisville, which opens the Kentucky Derby festival, is the world’s largest fireworks display.
2. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a tour of many Kentucky Bourbon manufacturers including, Four Roses, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Heaven Hill, Wild Turkey, Evan Williams, Town Branch and Woodford Reserve. It is a 3 day, 80+ mile journey of pure, bourbon pleasure.
1. The first horse racing was in Lexington in 1789, but the Kentucky Derby is the longest running horse race in the United States, beginning in 1875.
