Sometimes, the weirdest and strangest things you'll find in a state aren't the things we say, but the history of the place. It often gets a little boring here in Kansas, but sometimes, something odd happens and it goes down in the history books under the section titled, "Kansas did what now?" Let's take a look.

7. We honk at a tree for good luck.

At some point, word went around that honking at this particularly old tree on K96 gave one good luck. Not that I haven't also honked at it, but the concept is pretty strange, if you ask me.

6. The Bloody Benders' motivation.

No one has figured out why this little family in Cherryvale decided to go on a murdering spree, but the closest we've come to a motive is money. Maybe they should have been bandits instead?

5. A man robbed a bank in KC... just to escape his wife.

He handed the teller a card, stating he had a weapon and wanted cash. However, he chose to hang out on a bench in the lobby, and simply turned himself in when officers arrived. His motive? He preferred a jail cell over living with his wife, according to his statements to police. How nuts is that?

4. The entire town of Lucas.

If you're used to plain open pastures and normal brick-and-mortar buildings, then this town is a splash of color you wouldn't expect in small town Kansas. In fact, every corner here seems to house some odd display or mural. Why not take a look for yourself?

3. In Salina, a woman met a tiger face to face in a bathroom.

It had escaped its handlers during a performance, and the woman had simply been headed to the bathroom. However, it didn't attack her, and was captured safely. More reason not to keep tigers in circuses, I'd say!

2. A woman spots a pterodactyl between Rush Center and Larned.

If you weren't sure, then yes, a pterodactyl is a dinosaur, and the last of them became extinct somewhere around 66 million years ago. Yet, this woman claims it had featherless wings at a span of 16-20 feet. However, there's an entire book called Live Pterosaurs In America which collects the sightings of these long-extinct creatures all across the country. Definitely one of the strangest things I've heard, that's for sure!

1. Most of all, the strangest thing that happened in Kansas is that we all choose to live here!

Whether it's a tornado one day or a snowstorm the next, you'd think we wouldn't love this place so much. But we do love it, and it's well worth the occasional disaster to live in such a great place.
