City Kansas and rural Kansas people are almost two different kinds. We do have a ton in common as Kansans, but there's just some things you won't know if you live in the city. Johnson County and most of our bigger cities have a lot of great, well-meaning people---but sometimes, they just don't understand the rest of the state. Here are a few things that rural Kansas would like to remind the rest of us.
1. We're a lot smarter than you give us credit for.
Our schools are great even in our small towns. We aren't all farmers and ranchers, but even us regular folk in small towns are just as smart. Agriculture is one subject we'll be teaching you something about.
2. We've got plenty of history you've probably never heard of.
We've got tons of local history museums and a great museum full of fossils called the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. It'll blow your mind.
3. Some of us root for other teams, and that's okay.
Many of us are closer to Colorado anyways, so you can't blame us when it's something we're more exposed to.
4. We get a lot more snow than you, crazy weather or not.
Western Kansas might be known as a drier, flatter version of the rest of Kansas, but we get a lot of snow due to our proximity to Nebraska and Colorado.
5. Our churches are some of the most beautiful in the state.
We all have local churches that hold maybe 100 people comfortably, but there are also huge churches full of ornate carvings and even paintings. You just have to look around to find our beauty.
6. Most of our radio channels are in fact country music.
It makes sense that our favorite music is on the radio most often, right? That's just something you can't really complain about. You're in our house now!
7. Many of us find hunting season more important than football season.
Hunting season might bring us meat for a long time, and we can't always get to a large grocery store to find cheaper meat in bulk.
8. You'll find your new favorite restaurants out here instead.
We love our home cooking, but it all comes from the heart of our kitchens at home. That's what makes our restaurants that much better than the chains you're accustomed to.
9. We care about our food at home more than at restaurants.
No one gets spoiled more than those who had parents that loved to cook good Kansas food. If you've never had fresh skillet fried chicken, then you're really missing out.
10. We'd love to show you around.
We're a welcoming bunch, like all Kansans generally are, but if you just ask, we'll tell you all you need to know.
