Have you ever wondered what Kansas City looked like just 40 years ago? Though the 1970s aren't that long gone, it's still fun to reflect on what has changed since then. I know the first thing I notice is just how many patterns they used to put on everything! Here's a few vintage photos of our beautiful city (and it's people) from the 70s. Enjoy!
1. Our favorite stadiums being built circa 1970.
I wonder if they knew just how important they would be to us?
2. Ewing & Muriel Kauffman at a Royals game in 1973.
The Kauffmans were the founding owners of the Kansas City Royals.
3. A trip to the KC Zoo in 1971.
4. Another day at the Zoo in 1972.
See what I meant about patterns? They're so bright and happy!
5. A modest World's of Fun in 1972.
Is that the Zambezi Zinger in the background?
6. A couple of stylish older women in 1972.
The secret lies in the patterns they're wearing. Bright colors and florals, everywhere you look!
7. Rolling down 12th street in 1973.
8. The new "modern" seating at Union Station in 1974.
It was intended to contrast with the older, stone flooring. What do you think?
9. Amtrak travelers headed to New York City in 1974.
By this time, there were only about six trains per day served here, versus the 200 that used to be the norm in its heyday.
10. The outside of Union Station in 1974.
If you look closely, you can see that the main difference in this photo are the vehicles parked in the lot.
11. Two boys getting ready to enjoy Worlds of Fun in 1975.
True happiness really is just a giant cone of cotton candy, isn't it?
12. A picnic at the park in the 1970s.
I haven't heard of that root beer brand before, but that's probably because I was born after this photo was taken! Is that a glass bottle?
If you're enjoying these photos, you should definitely check out these photos from the 1960s and also from the 1950s.
