Ah, pie. Is there any more comforting treat? We don't think so, and everyone has their favorite. Some like a rich, hearty apple pie with the perfect lattice crust. I'm partial to a sweet-and-salty pecan pie, while others swear by the intense dessert of a chocolate cream pie. But is anyone picking... sour cream raisin pie? To most people around the country, they would think this sounds like a bizarre forgotten recipe from the 1950s - but for Hawkeye State residents, it's a cult favorite and definitely the most unique pie invented in Iowa. Believed to have originated with the Amish and Mennonite communities in the state, it's made its way around Iowa to play a supporting role in the lineups of some of our best bakeries and restaurants. And if you ask those who have tried it - it's delicious!
With so many incredible pies in Iowa, it's no surprise many people haven't heard of sour cream raisin pie.
But this pie, rooted in Amish and Mennonite cuisine, has a dedicated fanbase. It's a custard pie that has sour cream and raisins in the base before being topped with a massive meringue dome.
One of the best places to try it is at Amana's famous Ox Yoke Inn.
This classic family-style German restaurant is known for its pie selection. The version here is richly spiced and comes in slices or as a whole pie.
Not looking for a whole meal? Head to Lisa's Bake Shop in Spirit Lake, which boasts one of the biggest pie selections in the state.
The Sour Cream Raisin Pie here is a regular special, with some of the most impressive meringue peaks we've seen in a while.
