We Iowans have a deep love for our state - one that always seems to bring us home again after we wander off, and one that keeps Iowa in our hearts no matter how far away we move. Iowa may not have the glamour of Hollywood or the bright lights of New York City, but we have something even better - wide open skies for watching the stars, endless roads to cruise with the windows rolled down, and the best people you will ever meet. With that being said, the following are 15 reasons everyone should love Iowa.
1. We are the nicest people you will ever meet.
We Iowans are well known for our kindness and generosity. We wave at strangers, smile instead of looking down, and take time to talk to other people. Iowans will literally offer you the shoes off their feet and the coat off their back if you look like you need it. They are the nicest people you will ever meet and they are truly what makes Iowa such an amazing place.
2. We have fields of opportunity.
Iowa has fields of opportunities just awaiting harvest. We have one of the wealthiest capital cities, a low cost of living, cheap housing, and great education. Who wouldn't want to reap the benefits of our great state?
3. Iowa is rich in arts and culture.
You may be thinking there is no culture in corn fields, but Iowa is rich in culture and we have huge respect for the arts. We even have laws that make sure there is enough art in our public schools.
4. Everyone is welcome in Iowa.
We're not red. We're not blue. We're purple, which means democrats and republicans alike will find Iowa to their liking.
5. We believe in equality.
Iowa has always had a strong history of leadership in civil rights. Iowa legalized interracial marriage a century before the rest of the country, we operated the first state university to offer women degrees, and we outlawed segregated schools almost a century before the rest of the nation.
6. We watch the stars.
Big city skyscrapers can be great, but they block out the better views such as the twinkling stars scattered across the night sky.
7. We aren't in a rush because we like to take things slow.
In Iowa, we don't have a rush hour, and our traffic jams mean getting stuck behind a tractor. We aren't in a hurry, and we're glad to let you go first. We're just out enjoying the beautiful day. Life in Iowa couldn't get any better!
8. Iowa isn't just corn fields.
Iowa has gorgeous lakes, beaches, hills, cliffs, caves, rivers, and plenty more than meets the eye.
9. We have bright, gorgeous springs.
When it comes around, spring in Iowa is a wonderful time of year. Short, but wonderful. Think birds chirping, the smell of fresh cut grass, and morning dew on the ground.
10. We go walking in a winter wonderland.
You don't have to dream of a white Christmas. In Iowa, every Christmas is white. And sometimes spring, too.
11. We have glowing, golden summers.
Summer in Iowa means sweet corn, county fairs, late night bonfires, tubing, and cruising with the windows down. What more could you possibly need?
12. We have picture-perfect falls.
Nothing is more beautiful than an Iowan fall when the leaves turn into a sea of orange, gold, and red. This season is a perfect time for crunching around in the leaves, picking apples at the orchard, and carving giant, plump pumpkins you picked straight from the patch outside of town.
13. We have one of the best state fairs in the entire country.
Nothing compares to the Iowa State Fair, and we prove that every year with our bigger and better food, rides, music, and entertainment. Not to mention, we have a butter sculptor who carves immaculate statues (including the butter cow) every year.
14. Our Maid Rites are made right.
Iowa is the home of the Maid Rite, so of course we do it best. No ketchup here!
15. We have the best college sports fans.
We take our college sports seriously. Iowa vs Iowa State is one of the oldest school rivalries and a bigger deal than any other event of the year. Everyone and their grandma tailgates for the Iowa vs Iowa State game each year.
