There are universal truths, which are things that most of society accepts as the truth, like the fact that red means stop and green means go. But there are also things that only people from Iowa will know to be true, like the fact that it's pop, not soda, and a hot dish, not a casserole. Here are 13 things that only Iowans know to be true. How many do you agree with?
1. Sterzings are the best chips, period.
Leave the Lay's at home, and be ready to argue with any Pennsylvanians you come across who try to tell you Herr's chips are better.
2. We have the best ice cream in the country.
Le Mars is considered the ice cream capital of the country!
3. They're called hot dishes, not casseroles.
This one is obvious to anyone who spent time in their mom's kitchen.
4. When you need gas, you fill up at Casey's or Kum & Go.
While you're at Casey's, grab some pizza.
5. Hy-Vee's produce department makes you proud, and is second only to the farmer's market.
There's one huge benefit to living life in a farming state!
6. It's called pop, not soda. End of story.
Don't even try to order a soda out here... you'll get plenty of looks.
7. A lot of the corn you see is field corn and it isn't for eating.
The good stuff is a little farther from the road, anyway.
8. You never put ketchup on a Maid Rite. It's un-Iowan.
You can, however, argue about what you'll actually call them.
9. Wrestling is pretty much the state sport.
We're also into High School and College Football.
10. Pretty much nobody listens to the weatherman because it's pointless. Not even the weather knows what it's doing.
Just expect to wear your winter jacket in the morning and shorts by noon.
11. Iowa winters last a lifetime. Really. And sometimes it snows in the spring.
By the time the snow melts, you're dealing with tornadoes, anyway.
12. Pork tenderloins are pretty much the state dish.
The biggest ones aren't always the best ones, but it's fun to order a BPT so big that it falls off the edges of the plate.
13. It isn't strange to stop on the side of the road to buy sweet corn from a stranger. And you can find it in pretty much any parking lot in the summer.
There's nothing like fresh corn! Just watch out when it's zucchini season... you know that stuff multiplies!
