There are tons of fun things to see and do in the great state of Iowa. And then, there are the things that just scream IOWA that you really have to do if you want to be able to call yourself an Iowan. Here are the 11 quintessential things that every true Iowan does at least once before they die.
1. Go to the Iowa State Fair
Nothing says Iowa like the Iowa State Fair, where you can see cows made of butter, eat your weight in fried food, go on rides, see all kinds of live entertainment, and more.
2. Spend time at Iowa’s great lakes
A visit to Okoboji and Spirit lake is a must, whether you love swimming, boating and other water activities, enjoy perusing the shops, or want to check out one of the country’s oldest roller coasters at Arnolds Park.
3. Go to Adventureland
Rides, games, food, and fun! What’s better than that? Adventureland is an Iowa institution.
4. Tour the Bridges of Madison County
Our magical covered bridges of book and movie fame are totally a must visit. Even better, go to Madison County’s Covered Bridge Festival. It’s coming up in 2017 on October 7th & 8th.
5. Visit the Field of Dreams
"Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa." This famous baseball field tucked away in our iconic cornfields is about as Iowa as it gets.
6. Attend an Iowa or Iowa State game
Whether you’re a Hawkeye or Cyclones fan, here in Iowa, we love and support our teams, so getting out to watch a game is a must.
7. Have a meal at Breitbach’s Country Dining
Breitbach’s Country Dining is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Iowa, and it serves the kind of food that Iowa does best: good old-fashioned homestyle cooking with a menu featuring meat and potatoes and other tasty classics. 563 Balltown Rd, Sherrill, IA
8. Caucus
It can be annoying to be bombarded with political ads and people knocking on your door all the time, but it’s pretty amazing to get to be the first in the nation to caucus and to make our voices heard.
9. RAGBRAI
Ok, maybe not everyone is up for riding a bike all the way across Iowa, but there are plenty of ways to participate, from riding part of the route to living in a host town and experiencing the excitement that way.
10. Pay a visit to the American Gothic House
The house that’s in Grant Wood’s iconic painting is actually real, and it goes without saying that a visit to the house to reproduce the painting by posing for a picture in front of the house is a must. 301 American Gothic St., Eldon, IA.
11. Go to the Loess Hills
The Loess Hills in western Iowa may be some of the most unique landscape not only in Iowa, but in the world. The Loess Hills are made up of deposits of fine, clay-like, yellowish-gray sediment found at the edges of river basins. This type of soil can only be found in north-central Europe and eastern China outside the Midwestern U.S., and there are plenty of trails to explore!
