Vincennes, Indiana is officially considered the oldest city or town in the Hoosier state, dating back to before the 1800s. From 1800 until 1813, Vincennes served as the unofficial capital of the Indiana territory. This historic city was a popular trading post in the Midwest and has some of the area's oldest and most historic buildings.
The Vincennes Historic Sites are the oldest structures in the state. The red building found here served as the first unofficial capitol building and is considered the oldest government building still standing in the entire Midwest. You'll also find a replica of the first college in Indiana (Jefferson Academy founded in 1801), as well as the Elihu Stout Print Shop, where the first state newspaper, the Indiana Gazette, was first published. You can tour these historic buildings for $6 (with discounts for children and seniors).
While visiting this historic town, you'll want to check out the impressive George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Memorial building. While the structure was built in 1936, it celebrates a successful 1779 battle led by Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark over the British. The park itself is also worth a visit.
Grouseland, another popular historic attraction, offers an incredible tour of the home of one of our country's former presidents, William Henry Harrison. This building is a National Historic Landmark and museum dedicated to the 9th president of the United States.
