If you follow this site regularly, you already know there were a lot of famous people who were born in Indiana. Did you know there were also a lot of famous people who passed away in Indiana? Here is a little history lesson on seven famous individuals who passed away while in our beloved state.
1. Cannonball Adderley
Cannonball Adderley was the name of a renowned jazz musician. More specifically, he played the alto saxophone in his band with John Coltrane and Miles Davis. He was born in 1928 and passed away in 1975. On July 13th of 1975 he suffered from a stroke and slipped into a coma. He passed away just a few weeks later on August 8th of the same year in Gary, Indiana.
2. Johnny Appleseed
Contrary to popular belief, Johnny Appleseed was based on a real person despite being a folk hero. He was based on a man named John Chapman. The exact time of his death has been heavily debated over the years. Some sources claim he passed away in the summer months of 1845 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Other sources suggest the actual date of his death was March 18th of that year before summer even started.
3. Alfred Kinsey
Alfred Kinsey was a man of many professions including an academic, biologist, educator, zoologist, scientist, and journalist. He is known for his studies and research into sexual behavior. The last six months of this man’s life were difficult because he developed congestive heart failure. It was on August 25th of the year 1956 that Kinsey passed away in a Bloomington Hospital.
4. Benjamin Harrison
Benjamin Harrison is a name you likely recognize as he was the 23rd President of America. Sadly, Benjamin Harrison passed away as a result of a bad case of pneumonia in his home on March 13, 1901 in Indianapolis.
5. Ray Brown
Ray Brown is known for being both a bass player and an educator. He actually received a Grammy for his talents with the bass. Ray Brown is believed to have died a peaceful death having passed away in his sleep in Indianapolis at the age of 75.
6. Wes Montgomery
On June 15, 1968, Wes Montgomery woke up in the morning and told his wife that he did not feel very well. It was just minutes after he made that comment to his wife that he collapsed and passed away, dying of a heart attack. At the time he was at home with his wife in Indianapolis. Many of his fans considered his death a tragedy because he was still in the prime of his career.
7. Charles W. Fairbanks
Charles W. Fairbanks was a Senator of the state of Indiana as well as the 26th Vice President of the United States. He passed away on June 4th, 1918 having died of nephritis which is a condition that causes your kidneys to become inflamed. This is one of many famous individuals buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indiana.
