Reading about history is one thing, but seeing it can completely transport you to unfamiliar, earlier times. In Indiana, we’re lucky enough to have several places spread out across the state that you can visit if you want to learn a little more about life before modern technology. From religious experiences to utopian societies, Indiana has a historical site for everyone:
1. Connor Prairie
Okay, Connor Prairie is technically an outdoor museum just outside of Fishers, but it makes a great backdrop for photography, teaches visitors about the way of life in Indiana in 1836, and also showcases popular historic trades.
2. Pioneer Village
Located in downtown Nashville, Indiana, Pioneer Village is part of the Brown County Historical Society. It offers walking tours and glimpses at pioneer life in Indiana.
3. Metamora
Metamora is Indiana’s only functioning canal town. Escape to the past and take a boat ride along the canal, visit the gristmill and purchase some freshly stoneground flour or cornmeal, or enjoy the more than 40 shops along the way.
4. Swiss Heritage Village
The largest outdoor museum in Indiana, Swiss Heritage Village offers visitors the chance to see what life was like for the Swiss who once lived in the area, nearly 100 years ago.
5. Mansfield Village
Home to one of the largest annual Covered Bridge festivals, Mansfield Village remains true to the Hoosier traditions of years past.
6. Traders Point
Here you can visit some of Indiana’s more famous farm-to-table places, such as the renowned Traders Point Creamery. You can see the cows being milked, stop by the dairy store, visit the local farmers market, take a tour, or enjoy an organic, farm fresh meal.
7. New Harmony
This village isn’t your traditional historic site. New Harmony is one of the rare utopian villages that exist across the country. Founded in 1814, New Harmony opened the first free library and become a mecca for educational reform and advances.
8. The Village at Winona
Set along the Winona lake, this Hoosier city boasts old world charm, artisan shops, special events, and a large array of eateries and restaurants. Stay in the historic Westminster Hotel if you plan a trip there.
9. Historic Camp Chesterfield
Founded by the Indiana Association of Spiritualists in 1886, this historic site allows visitors to peruse their spiritual grounds, including sites like the Trail of Religion, the Labyrinth, the Totem Pole, the Garden of Prayer, and much more. Learn all about religious history at this preserved camp site.
10. Lincoln City
Discover where Abe Lincoln spent his boyhood years in this unique site in Indiana. Visit the extensive Abe Lincoln Boyhood Memorial and nearby grounds and stop by for a tour of Lincoln's boyhood cabin.
