Okay, let's face it: Indiana is simply a straight-up beautiful state. It seems like we've got it all: from dunes to beaches to forests and waterfalls, to open, rolling plains, life here is pretty beautiful and pretty sweet. But when you really sit down and think about it, some places might stand out as a few pegs above the rest. There are a lot of opinions out there as to what Indiana area is the most beautiful, but one particular region seems to be mentioned quite a bit: Brown County, Indiana. We're inclined to agree; take a look at some of these breathtaking scenes from around our pick for Indiana's most gorgeous area.
Brown County has a long, fascinating past full of everything you'd expect from a frontier town.
Some land was acquired from Native American folks via the 1809 Fort Wayne Treaty; later, in 1818, the Treaty of Saint Mary's would add more land to the purchase, and what would eventually become Brown County was born.
Once a government survey of the newly-acquired land was finished in 1820, people began moving into the area and settling down.
It grew quickly; by 1840, the population reached more than 2,300 residents. People came from near and far to establish new lives there.
These people were true pioneers, and thanks to ridiculously bad roads going into the growing town, they maintained this way of life even as neighboring counties were modernizing.
Despite the area being a booming commerce center for travelers coming through on foot and by horseback, money wasn't something that the town utilized much of just yet. Most of the transactions made here were made by the barter system.
Today, Brown County is just as attractive to folks moving to the Hoosier state as it ever was.
Artists began flocking to the area in the early 1900s; some well-known people in fine art have called Brown County home. Appropriately, there are so many art galleries in the county that we suggest you take an entire weekend to visit them all.
The natural beauty that earned Brown County its title as "Most Beautiful" is truly worth a visit all on its own. There are literally hundreds of trails you hike or walk to appreciate the incredible scenery.
It doesn't matter what time of year you come out; there will always be something absolutely breathtaking to admire.
There are several beautiful lakes, a few amazing nature preserves, tens of thousands of acres of state forest, and so much more to look forward to during your visit.
Once you grow tired of the outdoors (we feel like that might be impossible, though), take your pick of anything in an enormous list of activities in Brown County, including, but not limited to, birding, horseback riding, panning for gold, digging for gemstones, zip-lining, more art galleries than you could ever dream of, wineries, and so, so, SO much more.
