If you've decided to move to Indianapolis, you've made a great choice. However, before you pat yourself on the back, you're going to want to do some research on where in the city you're going to live. There are many great areas to choose from and we've compiled our list of the 10 best areas to live in the city.

1. Lockerbie Square

If you want to live in an area enriched by Indiana history, find yourself a place in Lockerbie Square. Regarded as Indianapolis’ oldest surviving neighborhood, this historic district is a downtown staple, famous for being the home of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley. For those in love with early 20th century architecture as well as everything downtown Indy has to offer, this is the neighborhood for you.

2. Woodruff Place

Located one mile east of downtown Indy, this historic neighborhood was one of the city’s earliest suburbs, established back in the 1870s. Home to some of Indianapolis’ most unique residential architecture, Woodruff Place was officially designated a local historic preservation district in 2001. If you’re looking to live in an iconic district close to downtown’s nightlife and professional sports venues, this neighborhood is what you’re looking for.

3. 16 Tech

If you’re a part of — or interested in becoming a part of — Indianapolis’ blooming technology industry, then the downtown neighborhood of 16 Tech is where you want to be. Located on the northwest side of the city, this residential and commercial area is designed specifically for those in the science and technology fields. Unique living spaces include Stadium Lofts, a group of live-and-work spaces situated inside historic Bush Stadium.

4. Broad Ripple Village

Ideal for college students and young professionals, Broad Ripple Village is an ideal neighborhood for those looking to be near vibrant nightlife and fantastic restaurant choices. Designated as one of the seven cultural districts in Indianapolis, this neighborhood is within walking distance of multiple brewpubs, hookah bars, and the city’s iconic Crackers Comedy Club.

5. Meridian Kessler

Known as one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods, Meridian Kessler is a great mix of young, upstart families as well as established, upper-middle-class residents. The beauty, safety, and affordable housing make this a wonderful place to live in Indianapolis. With a mix of public and charter schools, this neighborhood is one in which you’ll have little trouble finding good education for your children.

6. Fountain Square

One of the hip, artsy neighborhoods in downtown Indianapolis, Fountain Square is home to a wide assortment of restaurants, live music, and art. If you’re a young artist, you’ll love being surrounding by your peers as well as everything this neighborhood has to offer in terms of food, drinks, and nightlife.

7. Butler-Tarkington

The heart of this north side neighborhood is Butler University, where nearly 5,000 students attend for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The neighborhood is an eclectic mix of middle-class professionals and families as well as Butler students. Thanks to the recent additions to the university’s campus, the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood is extremely close to multiple restaurants and bars including Scotty’s Dawghouse, a local Butler-themed sports bar.

8. Old Northside

Old Northside has a long-standing reputation of being one of the most sought after areas in downtown Indianapolis. It’s classic look has been slightly urbanized, giving it a hip but classy feel. You’ll find a nice mix of apartment buildings, starter homes, and even a few jaw-dropping mansions throughout this downtown neighborhood.

9. Meridian Hills

Situated in the north side’s Washington Township, Meridian Hills is a stunning, wooded enclave perfect for upper-middle class families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown and its surrounding areas. On the more upscale side, Meridian Hills is home to one of the city’s premiere country clubs as well as multiple, highly-rated private schools.

10. Geist

If Meridian Hills isn’t enough of a northside escape for you and yours, you can find yourself a beautiful home along the reservoir in Geist. If a waterfront home is your style, you’ll have ample real estate to choose from in this Lawrence Township neighborhood. Be on the lookout for celebrities and athletes, as many have frequented Geist residences over the years, including Reggie Miller and former governor Mitch Daniels.
