Indiana has a pretty interesting history – and it also has its fair share of secrets, which you may not have learned about in school. Here are 8 of the coolest Indiana state secrets.
1. There are Catacombs deep below Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Catacombs are located right below the Indianapolis City Market. This underground secret is one of the only remaining operating catacombs in the world and can still be viewed during Halloween. You can learn more here.
2. There’s an island you can visit that was once an amusement park.
Rose Island is a hauntingly beautiful place. Accessible by Charlestown State Park, this gorgeous secret natural spot was once a bustling amusement park. This park closed in the early 1900s and nature has been reclaiming it ever since. You can find it at 12500 Highway 62, Charlestown, IN 47111.
3. Indiana is home to the world’s largest peach.
That’s right – the world’s largest peach can be found right here in the Hoosier state. This amazing fruit stands 20 ft tall and attracts visitors from all over the country You can find it at 7738 US-41, Bruceville, IN 47516.
4. A mini Statue of Liberty can be found in southern Indiana.
Madison, Indiana is a quaint and charming tourist town, but one sight you likely wouldn’t expect to find here is a mini Statue of Liberty replica. You’ll find this amazing state secret outside of the Jefferson County Courthouse at 300 E Main St # 300, Madison, IN 47250 and learn more here.
5. You can experience a former utopian society in southern Indiana.
New Harmony, Indiana is one of the most incredible towns in the entire country. This small town has gorgeous remains from when it existed as a utopian society. You can see the roofless church (a non-denominational outdoor church), two labyrinths, and much more. Learn more here.
6. There’s an amateur circus in Peru.

7. Indiana is home to 2 historic Dentzel carousels.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dentzel carousels were everywhere. Now, this type of carousel is pretty rare to come across, but luckily, Indiana still has 2 in operation: one can be found at the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis and the other at Riverside Park in Logansport.
8. There’s a crumbling pyramid in Needmore that was almost a wonder of the world.
At one point, there were plans to use the huge amount of natural limestone found in Bedford to build a mini, 96-foot tall Great Pyramid of Giza replica. The project was never completed, but you can still find the crumbling pyramid remains off of Old Hwy 37, Needmore, IN.
