When you grow up in Illinois, there are some classic attractions and activities you can't avoid. These 13 things are what tie us together and make us unique.
From events to vacation spots and even food, this is everything a true Illinoisan does at least once before they die. Read on for all the details.
1. Attended the state fair.
The Illinois State Fair is an annual event that takes place in Springfield each summer. Locals from near and far swarm the fairgrounds for fried delights, carnival rides, live music, and fun games. Even if this isn't your crowd, you've likely been at least once.
2. Watched a fireworks show.
Though fireworks are technically illegal in Illinois, professionals are allowed to put on presentations with proper safety personal nearby. Hoards of Illinoisans crowd huge fields and urban streets each summer to see these glowing fireballs sparkle in the sky. It's likely you've seen more than one.
3. Eaten a horseshoe.
You're definitely from Illinois if you even know what this is. It's made with thick-cut toast beneath a hamburger patty and French fries, topped with cheese sauce. This open-face sammich is a staple in some parts of the state.
4. Visited Chicago.
Of course, you've very likely been here before. One of the largest cities in the United States, Chicago is a wonderland of attractions in which you'll likely find something for everyone. Getting around can be a little difficult, but as long as you can embrace public transportation, you're golden.
5. Eaten deep-dish pizza.
Even if you haven't been all the way into the city, you've definitely tried this iconic pizza before. It is sold at many pizzerias in Illinois, even those far outside the city.
6. Gotten lost in a corn maze.
It's our instinct as Midwesterners to venture out to farms each year and enter a labyrinth of corn. The tall stalks make perfect walls that are impossible to see over, and some places create really intricate designs that can be difficult to crack.
7. Stopped at an attraction along Route 66.
From iconic restaurants to weird roadside wonders, this famous highway is home to many Illinois attractions. It starts in Chicago and leaves the state at St. Louis before continuing to Santa Monica Pier, so there's a good chance you've at least crossed it at some point.
8. Relaxed at a vineyard.
One of the best things to do on the weekend in Illinois is explore our outdoor wonders. Most are surprised to know that our great state is home to a wealth of award-winning wineries with unique concoctions all their own. Immaculate views, good eats, and tastings abound.
9. Visited a farm.
Some stereotypes about Illinois are painfully true. We don't all live on a farm, but many of us live near one, and we've all visited at least one once. Whether it's to get pumpkins and apples, learn about dairy cows, or just eat at its restaurant, farms are an important part of our culture.
10. Hiked to a waterfall.
You haven't truly experienced this state until you've ventured to one of its most marvelous gems. Many do not know that Illinois is home to several waterfalls, and they can be found in just about any region of the state. From Starved Rock State Park to the Shawnee National Forest, these majestic wonders attract hikers from all around.
11. Vacationed to Six Flags.
Whether you like to go in the summer or prefer to stop in for the holiday events, this top-notch amusement park is one of the best things to do in Illinois for adventure lovers. There's a good chance you went here as a child and now crave returning as an adult.
12. Played cornhole.
Some also call this game "bags," but whatever the name, it's a simple concept, and you've likely played at least once. Get the tiny beanbag in the tiny hole more than your opponent, and you win.
13. Swam in Lake Michigan.
Whether you visit the lake in Chicago, Illinois Beach State Park, or even the Indiana Dunes, you've likely had a dip in the waves of Lake Michigan. The best of all the Great Lakes, we take pride in the small portion we get to claim.
