Growing up in Chicago makes you see the world a bit differently from the rest of the nation, and it may make you susceptible to developing some strange habits. There's no reason to be ashamed though; most Chicagoans will defend their weirdness to the death - though we hope it doesn't have to come to that. Whether you've lived here all your life or are just starting to get acquainted with the best city ever, you'll recognize these odd customs.
1. Asking which neighborhood you're from.
To a true Chicagoan, it doesn't just matter that you live here... we want to know which of our lovely 77 burrows you call home.
2. Saying you're from Chicago when you're from the suburbs.
This is part of the reason for the previous question. Not everyone who claims to be from here actually lives in Chicago. To many in the state, though, all of Chicagoland is considered the city.
3. Displaying our flag everywhere.
Chicago is one of the only cities with strange habits like this. We fly our flag alongside Old Glory, and some even tattoo it on their bodies. City pride runs deep here.
4. Putting a fried egg on everything.
Chicago is known for throwing this breakfast food on many different dishes, particularly on burgers. It's all about that "wow" factor when we cut or bite in and the yellow oozes out.
5. Rooting for the Bears.
Chicagoans are loyal. Though the Bears have not won (or even been to) a Super Bowl in a long time, we still cheer them on and attend the games.
6. Speeding.
While we have some strange habits, this one might seem more tame. It's not a surprise that people speed or forget to use a turn signal on a regular basis here.
7. Checking the weather reports before leaving the house.
Even if yesterday's forecast claimed it would be cloudy and warm, things could have changed in the past 12 hours. Rain, snow, or any other inclement weather is always possible here, so we try to stay prepared.
8. Considering anything but this pizza.
While most of the nation is into that thin, floppy stuff, Chicagoans know that true pizza involves thick crust, hearty sauce, and a load of cheese. We don't care what anyone else has to say about this habit.
9. Marveling at the skyline.
Whether we're hanging out at the beach or heading down the Dan Ryan, our eyes are always looking up at the skies. We won't pass up any chance to glimpse the beauty of the skyline
10. Combining cheddar and caramel popcorn.
This sweet and salty delicacy is not to be passed up if you live in or visit Chicago. Of all our strange habits, this is the most tasty.
11. Buying fireworks in Indiana.
Basically, anything that isn't legal in Illinois or Chicago, we can get in Indiana (and sometimes Wisconsin). There are fireworks stands waiting just over the border for those in need for some pyro-fun.
Of course, there are many things that don't line up with the Chicago lifestyle. Check out these nine things a person from Chicago would never do.
