When you move to a new place, there's always a slight learning curve that comes with the adjustment. Some of us learn these lessons the hard way while wiser residents will heed these warnings.
Here are 13 things you will quickly learn when moving to Chicago. Keep scrolling for all you need to know.
1. Read parking signs.
You'll get ticketed or, worse, towed if your car is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Though sometimes small and hidden behind tree branches, you'll quickly pick up a radar for these important notices.
2. Winter is worse than you're expecting.
There's no way to get around how hard it is to clean up a tight-street city like Chicago after a big snowfall. The lucky ones get to stay inside, but you'll likely have to get to work somehow the next day regardless.
3. We don't shovel the sidewalks.
One thing you'll learn your first winter after you move to Chicago is that no one shovels the sidewalks. Plows do okay with the streets, but the pedestrian lanes are often dangerous, slushy nightmares.
4. Dibs is real.
When a Chicagoan places a chair in a parking spot after a big snow, it is a sign that they worked hard to dig out that spot. Last year, someone's break line was cut for parking in someone's dibs spot. Fair warning.
5. Always bring a jacket.
Even if it's summer, there is a chance you may need a jacket or at least a light cardigan at some point while you're out and about. This is especially true if you plan to spend time by the lake; the temperature there is often much cooler.
6. Chicago is more beautiful than you thought.
Our immaculate skyline, the lakefront, and all our fabulous green spaces make us one of the most gorgeous cities in the world. You will be blown away no matter which neighborhood you call home.
7. A day at the lake is pure bliss.
Spending time along the lakefront is a favorite activity for many Chicagoans, especially during the summer. Our beaches are crowded by locals who need to cool off.
8. Dieting is extra hard here.
With all those hotdogs and pizzas lying around, it can seem nearly impossible to watch that waistline. You'll quickly learn that we won't judge you though.
9. Bars are open late.
Some stay open until 2 a.m. while others keep things hopping until 4 a.m. There's always someone to drink with, too.
10. Public transportation is your friend.
Depending on traffic and where you live, it can be easier and quicker to take the train where you are going. Having a car is convenient, but you'll be stuck in traffic all the time.
11. Bikers own the road.
Technically, people on bikes are supposed to follow the same rules as cars, but they regularly blow through stop lights and meander onto the sidewalks. Most places have bike lanes, but when there's not, be prepared to share.
12. People come out of the woodwork in spring.
At the first sign of good weather after winter, it's amazing how many more people suddenly seem to live here. Bikers, joggers, people with strollers, and all sorts of other outdoors lovers flood the streets in spring and summer.
13. You can't afford to live in downtown.
It's stupid expensive to live in the Loop, unfortunately. Maybe, with a Groupon, you can afford to rent a hotel for a night or two and pretend you live the high life.
