In a city that gets hundreds of tourists a day, it is fairly easy to spot someone roaming around the city who isn't actually from here. Check out these 13 ways to always known when you've encountered an imposter.
From the way they look to the things they say, it's easy to notice when someone is not from the city. Keep scrolling for more details.
1. Taking pictures everywhere.
Though residents like to grab shots of their city too, tourists are so much more obvious about it. They must have a picture of each building at each angle and are often stopping in front of you to get a snap of some artwork.
2. Driving slow on the expressway.
Sure, sometimes you have to drive slow because there is so much traffic, but otherwise, you need to pick up the pace. It's a sure sign that you're out of your element if you're driving the speed limit or under on the Kennedy or Edens.
3. Riding a segway.
Chicagoans know there are a million better ways to get around the city. Nothing screams "tourist" like a Segway tour.
4. Complaining about the cold before it's below freezing.
Chicago gets cold, and those of us who have lived here awhile have gotten used to it. If someone says they're freezing when it's only 40 degrees out, they're likely an imposter.
5. Not dressing for the weather.
On the other hand, someone might be cold because they aren't properly dressed. Chicagoans know to always bring a sweater and wear appropriate shoes when braving the elements. It's a sure sign you're not from here if you're still only wearing shorts and t-shirts in November.
6. Not reading parking signs.
This is a lesson you only learn once. Read the signs for parking here, or your car is likely to be ticketed or, worse, towed. The print may be small, but it's worth double checking.
7. Not knowing where the Cubs play.
Everyone knows the famous stadium where the Cubs play. The neighborhood it's in is even named after it. You're likely to find some imposters here too.
8. Being wrong about why we're called the "Windy City."
Everyone thinks we call ourselves this because the wind gets wild here. While this is true, the term was actually used by a reporter to say the city was full of hot air. In other words, Chicago was being accused of over boasting its accomplishments.
9. Not knowing what a jibarito is.
This Chicago invention is made from fried plantains placed around fresh meat and veggies. It's one of the best sandwiches in the city, but few know it exists. It gets a little lost amongst the Italian beef, hot dogs, and pizza.
10. Thinking Chicago only has deep-dish pizza.
Speaking of which, an imposter is likely to mistake Chicago as a one-trick pony when it comes to savory pies. True Chicagoans know, though, that we have thin crust, stuffed, and everything in between, including pizza puffs and pizza pockets.
11. Drinking a national/international beer.
Chicagoans only drink local, so if you order something like Corona or Bud, we're going to know you're not familiar with Chicago's finest brews. Asking your bartender for a recommendation may out you as well, but at least you'll get a better drink.
12. Mispronouncing Chicago street names.
There are many weird names used throughout Chicago. Due to our Polish, German, Mexican roots, we get street names like Bryn Mawr, Paulina, and Devon.
13. Not getting excited about Lake Michigan.
One of the things Chicagoans love most about their city is the lake. It gives us an incredible coast complete with beaches and amazing views. To us, it's better than any ocean.
