You may think you're fooling people when you travel out of state, but everyone knows you're from Illinois, and here are 12 ways in which it's totally obvious. Don't try to hide it, though. These are also the things that make us special.
1. Offering random facts about corn and farming.
Especially if you grew up in or near a farm town, you probably picked up many facts about farming even if you don't live on a farm yourself. You know why the fields switch between growing corn and wheat, and you know how high the maize needs to be by July.
2. Never believing a weather forecast.
You can't blame an Illinoisan for taking what the weatherman says with a grain salt. Whether they're calling for rain or shine, there's a good chance it'll all change. We just prepare for anything here.
3. Driving a tractor on the highway.
There's a good chance someone will know you're from Illinois if you drive your tractor everywhere. Head out of state, and they'll spot you for sure.
4. Claiming Illinois is the Land of Lincoln.
Several states like to claim Abraham Lincoln, but true Illinoisans know that we're his true state. Born in Kentucky, he also spent some time in Indiana before moving to the Prairie State.
5. Speeding.
Be careful with this one when going out of state. Surrounding areas follow their speed limits to a T, and you don't want to stick out for cops to spot.
6. Not using a turn signal.
Like with speeding, residents in neighboring states are religious about road rules. Neglect to use that signal, and people might suspect you're not from their parts.
7. Complaining about Chicago.
It seems like everyone out of state loves Chicago but many people who live in the state don't care for it. Start talking bad about one of the top three cities in the country, and people may suspect you're from Illinois.
8. You're not phased by trains.
Train tracks run every which way through the Prairie State, and most Illinoisans are used to having to stop and wait for them to pass. Your patience is something you've had to practice over the years, and everyone knows it.
9. Talking about government corruption.
While other states may have issues with their government, Illinois has a reputation for corruption that it has not been able to shake. Thinking that all politicians are bad is typical here.
10. Wearing Wolves or White Sox sports gear.
You'll find plenty of Black Hawks and Cubs memorabilia outside of the state, but only true Illinoisans follow the Wolves and the White Sox.
11. Your license plate.
Of course, the plate on your car is a sure signal of what state you're from. Don't forget that everyone on the road knows.
12. Your accent.
You may not think you have one, but travel outside the Midwest, and you'll find that people can tell where you're from by the way you talk.
