A sleepy little town in Idaho's Silver Valley, Murray isn't typically considered an especially popular tourist spot. However, if you take the time to explore the treasures this town has to offer, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The history behind this town is bound to pull you in. One of the only businesses in town, the Sprag Pole Inn and Museum is a great place to start when you feel like digging into Murray's rich history.
Welcome to the little town of Murray, Idaho! Named after prospector George Murray, this community was one of the liveliest mining camps in North Idaho during the late 1800s.
Located 20 miles from the town of Wallace on Dobson Pass Road, Murray is a quiet place that's mostly home to retirees, loggers, and prospectors. It may not be as rowdy of a place as it once was but there's still plenty to love about Murray, like the iconic Sprag Pole Inn and Museum.
The Sprag Pole plays a combination of roles in the community. Housed inside one of the town's original buildings, it contains a restaurant, lodge, and even a museum dedicated to preserving the region's past.
It may seem like a strange place for a museum, but the knick-knacks and artifacts you'll find inside are a delightful surprise. Boasting 12 special exhibits, visitors can explore displays that depict things like an old blacksmith and barber shop, schoolroom, post office, and doctor's office.
One of the museum's highlights is Molly B'Damn's bedroom. A prominent figure in Murray, Molly's real name was Maggie Hall but she went by the name Molly Burdan. When said with her strong Irish accent, it sounded a lot like Molly B'Damn!
After exploring the museum, be sure to grab a bite to eat and something cold to drink at the Sprag Pole's restaurant. Both the burgers and fish and chips are popular options among diners.
There's no better way to get to know Murray than with a stop at the Sprag Pole. Both a beloved gathering place for the community and an ode to Murray's rich history, it's definitely worth checking out when visiting this historic mining town.
