July 3, 1890, is one of the most important dates in history. Do you know what happened that day? It was the day Idaho officially became a state. But, Idaho didn’t just become any state … it became the BEST state! There are dozens of reasons we could list explaining why Idaho is the best state in America but we don’t want too many people rushing into its borders. So, in honor of Idaho’s birthday, here are just 11 reasons why Idaho is the best state in America.
1. Idaho is home to some of the most photographed mountains in the country.
The Sawtooth Mountains are stunning any time of the year, but we particularly love the summer when we can explore the mountains on one of its many hiking trails.
2. Our lakes are seriously some of the best.
Lake Pend Oreille, Lake Coeur d’Alene, Payette Lake, Priest Lake … do we need to go on?
3. Our small towns are charming, peaceful, and perfect.
In fact, they are the heart and soul of Idaho.
4. Just two words — Shoshone Falls.
Idaho is home to the Niagara of the West and we are proud of that fact.
5. We can’t get enough of the Palouse and are proud to share it with Oregon and Washington.
6. If you are up for an adventure, Idaho is home to more miles of whitewater than anywhere else in the Continental United States.
7. Hells Canyon is one of our greatest natural wonders. This incredible gorge is the deepest in North America — even deeper than the Grand Canyon.
This is one natural wonder in Idaho you need to see for yourself.
8. We have some incredible claims to fame. For example, did you know that the first chair lift in America was in Idaho?
It’s no surprise that the first chair lift was located at the breathtaking Sun Valley Ski Resort.
9. Huckleberries!
We just can’t seem to get enough of our state fruit.
10. Not many people realize that we have dozens of wineries scattered around the Gem State.
In fact, there are more than 50 wineries dotting the state and they produce more than 25 varieties of wine.
11. For an activity in Idaho that’s a little slower paced, how about a scenic drive? There are 31 established scenic byways in Idaho.
And we highly recommend each and every one!
