While Idaho is known for its potatoes, there are many other wonderful things that our great state brought individuals around the country. For example, the chair lift made days on the slopes much more enjoyable and the television allows for entertainment any time of the day. But, there is one lesser-known invention that also got its start in Idaho — the floating green. If you are a golf enthusiast, this is just one more reason to love the Gem State.
The Coeur d’Alene Resort is one of my favorite getaway destinations. Any time of the year, this northern Idaho resort is full of activities and things to do and see. In the winter, we especially love the Journey to the North Pole cruises, and in the summer, there’s nothing like a day at the golf course.
The 14th hole on the Coeur d’Alene Golf Course is quite well known. In fact, it has become famous. This is because this hole features a unique design and challenging play. It is the Floating Green.
This is the first floating green at a golf course and it is truly impressive. It is 2,200 tons that can move. It uses an underwater cable system that allows the green to change positions.
Whether you want to play from 90 yards or even 220 yards (the championship tee), it’s all possible.
The Floating Green dates back to 1991, which was the year the first ball was played at the hole. The idea came when a man was out walking his dog. He saw a raft of logs being pulled by a tugboat on the lake. He then had the idea for a golf hole out in the water and it was brought to life.
Today, you can play on the Floating Green and the other holes on the Coeur d'Alene golf course. But, no matter which hole you play, you will enjoy breathtaking views. There’s a reason people travel from all over the country to play here.
