There is absolutely no doubt about it: the Aloha State is easily the most unique state in America, from its varied scenery to its unique culture. And while Hawaii is a magical place for a vacation, it's an even better place to live or grow up. Whether you’ve lived in Hawaii your entire life, or have recently moved to the islands, there are a few Hawaii life lessons everyone who lives here learns — regardless of if they are five years old or fifty.
1. Live in the moment.
Life is just a little bit slower in Hawaii, and that’s the way we like it. While in Hawaii, you’ve got to let loose, go with the flow, and truly live in the moment.
2. There is nothing nature can’t fix.
Let me let you in on a little secret: Hawaii is consistently rated as the healthiest state in America because we live outside. We are not only active, but we also recognize that the best cure for depression — or just a bad day — is to enjoy a little vitamin sea or go for a long, beautiful hike.
3. Life is a grand adventure.
In Hawaii, the islands are your playground. From surfing, snorkeling, and kayaking, to hiking, skydiving, and zip lining, there is no shortage of adventure in Hawaii.
4. A smile is everything.
A little Aloha spirit goes a long way throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
5. The ocean is in charge.
Don’t for a second think that you’re in control while in the beautiful Pacific. Let the ocean take control, and let the waves take you where they may. But also, try not to turn your back to the ocean.
6. Life is easier without expectations.
Having goals is great, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you have to push those worries aside and just, live. Allow your life to unfold as it will, and you will be much happier.
7. Be open to life, love, and new experiences.
Don’t let your fears or past heartbreak hold you back. Embrace new experiences, and the love that surrounds you in Hawaii.
8. Success comes in many forms.
While we work hard in Hawaii, success isn’t dependent on your job title or how much money you make. Sometimes, success is about reaching to top of a tough hike without stopping or catching the perfect wave rather than obtaining a certain salary or job title.
9. Appreciate the little things.
A gorgeous sunrise during your morning commute, a rainbow after the storm, or a delicate flower that has fallen on the sidewalk: we acknowledge that it’s the little things that make life truly wonderful.
10. Money isn't everything.
Yeah, we know living in paradise isn’t cheap, but the things that keep us here — like the incredible hiking, gorgeous beaches, and stellar views — are free.
11. Ohana is everything.
From your blood relatives to friends who are like family, there is little more important in Hawaii than ohana.
