Hawaii is a dream for many retirees; where better to enjoy your later years in life than near the beach, where you can take de-stressing walks in the sand, and live in a climate that is merciful on your arthritic bones? But then you have to factor in the cost of living – which puts Hawaii low on the list of the best places in America to retire. But if you are a wealthy retiree, these eight cities in Hawaii are a cut above the rest.

1) Hilo, Big Island

Many retirees flock to Oahu and Maui without really considering the Big Island, where cities like Hilo have yet to become inundated with tourists and commercial development. The cost of living in Hilo is much cheaper than many other Hawaii locales, and the city boasts a laid-back lifestyle. The city does receive a great deal of rain, so that must also be a consideration.

2) Paia, Maui

Much of Maui – which has been the winner of Conde Nast Traveler’s "Best Island" award 19 times – has become a tourist magnet, but not Paia, a small seaside surfing town with stellar beaches and a booming art scene. In case that doesn’t sell you on the benefits of this charming town, Paia is often the city where locals vacation to get away from it all. Sounds nice, huh?

3) Haleiwa, Oahu

Located on Oahu’s north shore is Haleiwa – a sleepy beachside town by summer, and happening surf mecca in the winter. This funky town is the perfect city to retire in for second chapter surfers and beach bums alike.

4) Kailua-Kona, Big Island

Unlike Hilo, Kailua-Kona receives very little rain, and the area is full of phenomenal golf courses, amazing beaches, and a cost of living that is lower than average for Hawaii. Despite increasing popularity as a tourist destination, Kailua still feels like a small seaside village.

5) Hana, Maui

Looking to get away from it all and live in relative isolation? Hana is perfect for you. Tourists flock to see the natural wonders surrounding the town, but otherwise, this is the spot to get away from civilization and truly relax.

6) Kaneohe, Oahu

Though Kaneohe is only 25 minutes from the capitol city of Honolulu, it feels worlds away – and is separated by mountains, making it the perfect spot for those retirees who want to get away from it all, but still be close enough to the action – and good hospitals.

7) Waimea, Big Island

Inland from Hawaii’s Kohala Coast is Waimea, a town unlike any other. The historic area is full of rolling green pastures and is known as paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country. Perfect for those who want a rural, country life with island amenities nearby.

8) Kihei, Maui

Once a regular destination for Hawaiian royalty, Kihei is home to some incredible views, and six miles of stunning beaches. There are also a variety of senior assisted living homes in the area, if necessary.
