Everyone knows that Georgians are usually mild-tempered, agreeable, and freeflowing with Southern Hospitality. But there are definitely a few ways that you can tick off a Georgian faster than you can say "Brunswick Stew". So, if you want to keep in a Georgian's good graces, then make sure you don't try any of these 15 things.
1. Tell us that sports are a really nice hobby.
Georgians take sports seriously. Whether it’s a child’s high school football game, watching UGA on Saturdays, or a season of keeping up with the Braves, we love our sports teams and to us, it’s not just a hobby—it’s a way of life.
2. Assume we’re all country bumpkins.
Look, just because we live in the country, doesn’t mean we are illiterate. And just because we live in Georgia, doesn’t mean we all live in the country. Georgia is filled with beautiful cities too (not just Atlanta), with masses of people who all like to have a good time, and who are intelligent as heck.
3. Say that your BBQ is better than ours.
It’s not. I’m sure it’s not. Have you ever had Georgia barbeque sauce? Oh, you didn’t know we have our own barbeque sauce?! That’s because our BBQ is just that dang good.
4. Consider all Georgians to be rednecks.
Hey, guess what, most Georgians aren’t rednecks. But in fact, Georgia does have a fair share of rednecks in the state, and they happen to be pretty easygoing and fun people. Ditch the misconceptions, because it just gets us MAD.
5. Say you have to travel to Florida to have fun.
Look, Florida has some pretty fantastic attractions and beautiful beaches. But if you gave Georgia a fair shot, you’ll see that we have the same amount of awesome attractions, if not more, and some insanely breathtaking beaches of our own.
6. Assume everyone owns a farm.
Sure, Georgia is one of the top states for agriculture production in the United States. But we also have plenty of other jobs that deserve recognition, too. Not everyone in Georgia runs a farm or knows how to operate a tractor (although, we do celebrate those who do).
7. Think that we always just have a stash of peaches.
Indeed, peaches are a hot commodity in Georgia. Heck, it’s the Peach State for cryin’ out loud. But that doesn’t mean that because we live in Georgia, we have continual access to said peaches. Besides the fact they’re seasonal, we need to go out and buy them like everyone else.
8. Think you have to travel north to get in any good hiking.
Nope. Wrong. Georgia has some incredible hiking trails throughout the state. Miles and miles of beautiful vistas and scenic overlooks. In fact, the hiking community in Georgia is quite big and very much respected.
9. "You guys didn’t invent Brunswick Stew."
Uh, we did. In fact, we have a statue proves it.
10. Assume you should probably travel to Florida to get any good seafood.
This.is.wrong. Coastal Georgia is not only beautiful, but it also provides some of the freshest local seafood you’ve ever tasted. You don’t even need to leave the state in order to savor some lobster, or open up a few fresh oysters.
11. Think that just because we say “Ya’ll” we’re uneducated.
Sure, we say "ya’ll" in place of "you all". Does that make us stupid? Nope. In fact, Georgia has some of the best high schools in the U.S., right in their backyard, not to mention a handful of successful colleges and universities. So what do ya’ll think about that?
12. Make us choose between Chick-Fil-A and KFC.
That’s like asking us which child we like best. Nope, sorry, we can’t do it. We love both equally in their very own special way.
13. Say you’ve been to Georgia when you’ve only been here:
Atlanta is great. Savannah is great. But there is so much more to our state than our big cities. You have to really set out and explore our small towns to know what we mean.
14. Assume it gets pretty boring during the winter.
Sure, a lot of things may shut down during a nasty storm, but truthfully, Georgians can have a blast no matter the weather outside.
15. Forget kindness and compassion when you visit.
We get it, you come from a different part of the country. But here in Georgia, we take things slow, we say hello, and we hold doors open. Human kindness goes a long way for Georgians. It’s our bread and butter.
As you can tell, Georgians rule. It's no wonder that so many people move to our great state and never leave. Sure, our feathers may get ruffled every once in a while, but that just means that we're proud of our state, and proud of the people who represent our state.
