Historic Savannah is one of the most popular destinations in the entire state of Georgia. It's a beautiful city, that lends itself to a tremendous amount of history within this country. People flock near and far to Savannah to experience places such as Forsyth Park or Bonaventure Cemetery, take a stroll down Wormsloe Plantation, or grab some grub at the ever-popular Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. But the things you may know about Savannah probably pale in comparison to what you do not know about this great city. Here are 10 fascinating things that you may not have known about Savannah, Georgia:
1. Their free concerts can rival some of the best out there.
While Austin has SXSW and Chicago has Lollapolooza, Savannah has a few music concerts of their own. Lately, these festivals have been drawing HUGE crowds primarily because they are FREE. Pack a picnic and Google their schedule, as they add more concerts during the spring and summer.
2. Savannah has a huge Irish population.
This means one thing: St. Patrick's Day is a huge celebration in this great city. The entire month know of March is dedicated to parades, festivals, and other events celebrating the history of the Irish. Did you know they also turn the water in the fountain at Forsyth Park green?
3. Some very popular movies were filmed right in the heart of the city.
OK, so maybe you've heard of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil filming here, but what about Cape Fear? Or maybe you didn't know that some of the most important parts of Forrest Gump were filmed in Chippewa Square?
4. Savannah is filled with wildlife.
Many may not think that this beautiful urban city is home to some serious wildlife, but there are tons of grasslands and marshes in Savannah that are home to dolphins, alligators, birds, manatees and whales.
5. Savannah has more single women than men.
After a Census evaluation by the Martin Prosperity Institute, it was discovered that there are at least 5,000 more available woman than men living in the city. So if you're a single man, Savannah might be the place to be.
6. If you're looking for a boozy-good-time, head to Tubby's Seafood.
It's loocated on River Street. Since Savannah is home to the nation's largest container port, Tubby's has invented a game where they'll pour you a $1 shot for every ship that passes the restaurant. (Sounds like trouble.)
7. You can take your drink to-go.
The alcohol policy in Savannah states that you can take your drink "to-go" at any bar north of Jones Street. (This certainly leads to some very entertaining evenings people watching from the sidelines.)
8. Savannah has the BEST place to get pralines in the entire state.
River Street Sweets is the place to be for all things pralines and taffy. If you're craving a sweet treat and want to sample for free, then this is the place to be.
9. The Fragrant Garden in Forsyth Park was made for the blind.
Everyone loves to smell the blossoms in this beautiful garden, but what really makes it special was that it was made especially for the blind, who can really focus their sense of smell while there.
10. Feel like going island hopping? It's entirely possible.
You don't need to have a boat to go island hopping in Georgia. You can get a chartered boat or find a willing captain to take you to any of the amazingly beautiful barrier islands just a hop, skip and jump away.
