Washington, Georgia is the county seat of Wilkes County, and with a population of fewer than 5,000 residents, this small town packs a big punch in terms of American history. Come enjoy a weekend getaway and see some of the coolest historic landmarks in Washington, Georgia.
Washington, Georgia holds an important place within the history of the United States. For instance, when it was originally dubbed Heard’s Fort, it was designated as the state capital during the American Revolutionary War.
Also, this charming town is known as being the place where the American Civil War ended, due to the Confederacy voting to dissolve itself.
For anyone looking to visit Washington, however, there are a few historic landmarks that we recommend in order to really get a feel for the history.
Start by exploring Robert Toombs House State Historic Site, which was officially declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
This house museum offers exhibits about the life of Robert Toombs, a U.S. representative and U.S. senator from Georgia, who became a general during the American Civil War.
After a visit to the Toombs House, head on over to Kettle Creek Battlefield, the place where the Patriots defeated the Loyalists in 1779.
The battlefield is situated on a 220-acre tract and represents the place where Georgia officially separated from British control.
After Kettle Creek, check out the Downtown Washington area which features pockets of history throughout, from the antebellum architecture to the placards highlighting important moments in time.
The Washington-Wilkes Welcome Center & Chamber of Commerce is a great place to stop in to snag some information about both the town and the county.
Or make sure to swing by the Washington Historical Museum, which was built around 1835 and features a bevy of memorabilia, artifacts, photos, and antiques representing over 200 years of Washington’s history.
