Living in Florida isn't always easy, even though we wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. Living anywhere, though, is a lot easier if you learn to laugh at yourself. Floridians usually have a pretty good sense of humor, so we figured we should share some of our favorite jokes about living in our favorite state:
1. We cohabitate with some terrifying creatures.
2. Worried about the influx of out-of-state drivers? Just add this helpful diagram to your car.

3. If there's a body of water, there's probably an alligator in it.
4. Now say them five times fast.
5. Here you see our typical skincare regimen.
6. We might not have the prettiest foliage, but we have our own ways of telling when the seasons are changing.
7. What even is this "Subway" you speak of?

8. Never buy your pumpkin on the first day of "fall."
9. Aw, they're kind of cute...
10. Most of us are pretty warm-blooded.

14. And of course, we can't forget that famous Sunshine State weather.

When I heard that I had family moving to Venice, Florida, my first thought was, “Where is that?”. I lived in St. Petersburg for a little bit, but Venice is not too much further south, but I had never heard of it. We visited one fall, and I was excited to explore a new place. What I found was a quiet beach town that suspiciously lacked the busyness that plagues other parts of the state. The secret is starting to get out, and I could see plenty of potential in this lovely little Florida town.

As we drove down, we mentally prepared ourselves for Tampa traffic. I have been stuck in completely stopped bummer-to-bummer situations more times than I can count, so we prepared for the worst. I was pleasantly surprised that we made it through without a single problem. We even passed the notorious malfunction junction like it was a breeze! I expected more of the same as we continued south, but once we got close to Venice, it was like we were all alone on the road. I had already started to like this town.
We were staying with family, and the accommodations were more than I had hoped. The next morning, after breakfast, I was handed a helmet and expected to join the bike ride. I have never liked bike riding very much, but my wife loves it, so I wanted to be a good supporter and decided I would ride along too. I ended up loving it, and we rode miles around town that day.
I heard somewhere that the best way to explore a new area is either on a bicycle or by walking. The principle is to slow down to appreciate the things that are around you, and I took in all of the sights as we rode. There were several little trails and pleasant parks we passed by and I could see the charm in this town everywhere I looked.
We eventually ended up at CoolToday Park, where the Atlanta Braves play during spring training. The place was pretty empty when we went, but I could imagine plenty of excited fans coming to get the first glimpse of the season in this gorgeous stadium. Not every city has an MLB team come to its own backyard, so this struck me as pretty special.
Later, we visited Venice Beach, which really is the crown jewel of the town. This beautiful beach offers a relaxing retreat where you can leave the cares of the mainland behind as you soak up the sun and splash in the cool water. We took a walk and looked for shark teeth, a common find along the water’s edge. The gentle waves and soft sand are akin to many Florida beaches I have been on, and the feeling never gets old. We enjoyed the beach as the sun was setting, and there was nothing better than ending the day with a sunset on the Gulf of Mexico.
Venice, Florida, was a pleasant break from the norm for us as we visited the sunshine state again. Everything in the city seemed new and vibrant, with plenty of room to grow. I can easily see this place growing as time goes on. It is just a matter of time before people discover the gem this town really is. To try out this spot for yourself, check out this beautiful Venice Beach condo to stay right near the water. If you are looking for a good place to eat in town, then make sure to visit Snook Haven for some great BBQ.
It’s hard not to fall in love with coastal towns in Florida, especially those hidden gems that ooze tranquility and peace. But there is also something about the color scheme that seems to be recurring in these towns that makes them extra delightful. You know the colors we mean, right? The bright blues, yellows, and pinks that just shout - coastal town, here I am! Sure, some of these towns now paint their houses bright colors for aesthetic reasons, but did you know there was an actual reason why way back when?

Do you ever visit a coastal town in Florida and wonder why the exterior of the houses is bursting with color?
Believe it or not, the idea wasn’t just simply aesthetics. Also, it isn’t just Florida. There are coastal towns throughout the world that are so beautifully bright, encouraging travelers to spend time getting lost in the beauty.
Shore towns throughout the world began painting buildings with very bright colors thousands of years ago. Little did they know, these colors would soon be a beloved characteristic for travelers.
Every town that is coastal, or built right on the water, was at one point a fishing town.
Brightly painted buildings within these coastal fishing towns allow the areas to become a visual marker on the shoreline from when out on the water.
So when fishermen were out on the water, they were easily able to navigate back to where they needed to be by using the bright colors of the houses as a guide.
Another reason why many Florida coastal towns are so colorfully painted is due to the warm climate Florida holds.
Bright paint is useful in reflecting heat from the sun, which helps keep the interior of the home cool.

Eventually, photography-based tourism took hold in the 60s, where families who had a camera could enjoy a color slideshow showcasing their vacations.
The brightly painted buildings remained brightly painted as an attractor for tourism and for anyone looking to snap a photo in an iconic colorful beach town.
Now especially with social media, many Florida coastal towns understand that the colorful aesthetics provide for them an advantage when it comes to tourism.
So the next time you come across a colorfully painted row of houses along the shoreline of a coastal Florida town, you’ll understand that it’s both beautiful and functional!
