True crime has really become a very popular genre over the last few years. Podcasts, television shows, and books have raised public interest in cold cases. Some of these cases have even been solved by regular everyday people. The Constitution State is known for its low crime rate, but there are unsolved crimes in Connecticut just like everywhere else. Read on to learn about some of the most disturbing unsolved mysteries in Connecticut.
1. Murder of Sylvia Baker - 1982, Hartford
Sylvia Baker was a beautiful young woman who attended college and loved her two children. She went to take out the trash one evening in 1982 and her children saw her speaking with neighbors outside. A van pulled up and Sylvia seemed to recognize who was driving. She got inside, the van drove off, and Sylvia was never seen alive again. A few days later, her body was found a few miles away abandoned in a river in Hartford's Keney Park (pictured). Her murderer was never found and the case did not get very much publicity at the time. Some investigators believe that she could have been the victim of an unknown serial killer. Several other women were killed in a similar manner around the same time period.
2. Murder of Champaben Patel and Anita Patel - 1996, Windsor
Champaben and her daughter Anita were brutally slain in Champaben's Windsor home. The police almost immediately focused on Champaben's adult son, Jatin, as a suspect. It was thought that there was family drama from his parents not approving of his wife. Jatin has consistently denied being involved in the murders. The police have been unable to find enough information to charge him with the crimes.
3. Murder of Suzanne Jovin - 1998, New Haven
Suzanne was a 21-year old Yale University student who was brutally stabbed to death in 1998. A man was seen fleeing the scene but has never been caught. The police investigation was clumsy and, by some accounts, botched.
4. Murder of Joseph Pellicci - 1973
When 32-year old Joseph Pellicci went missing in 1973, it was big news in Connecticut. He was the son of the founder of the popular Pellicci's Italian restaurant. His body was found a month later in New York. Some believe that the Mafia was involved in his death. The case was going to be part of a television series on unsolved cases, but the show never aired.
5. Murder of Raquel Ramirez - 1985, Hartford
Raquel Ramirez was just 29 years old when she was killed. Her body was found near the Connecticut River. Few clues were discovered and the police appear to have very little to go on.
6. Discovery of "Baby Victor" - 1986, Fairfield
In 1986, the police were called to Lake Mohegan, where a tortured and murdered newborn baby had been found. Small trinkets were placed around the body and it looked to be some sort of ritualistic sacrifice. The police nicknamed him Baby Victor, and he has never been identified, nor his killers found.
