Connecticut is such an interesting state with a rich history. We've got centuries of existence, and with that comes lots of firsts and unique accomplishments. 1. About 55-60% of Connecticut is forested.
2. Connecticut has the third-largest number of millionaires per capita in the United States.
3. The single largest manufacturing plant in Connecticut is the Sikorsky Aircraft plant in Stratford, which produces helicopters.
The company opened the plant in 1956 and it now spans more than 2.2 million square feet.
4. From 1701 to 1874, both New Haven and Hartford were the capitals of Connecticut.
In 1701, Hartford and New Haven were named co-capitals, and each had its own government buildings. The General Assembly met in each city every six months. In 1875, Hartford became the sole capital, as it was determined it was too expensive to maintain two sets of records and governmental buildings.
5. Connecticut has just eight counties. Only three other states have fewer.
6. Yankee Doodle is the official state song of Connecticut.
We also have a second state song (Beautiful Connecticut Waltz), a state cantata (The Nutmeg), and a state polka (Ballroom Polka).
7. The first speed limit in Connecticut was just 12 miles per hour.
8. The Hartford Courant is the country's oldest continuously operating newspaper.
It was first published as The Connecticut Courant in 1764.
9. The record for largest group of door-to-door Christmas carolers was set in Connecticut.
The record-setting event occurred in 2012, when 502 Christmas carolers went door-to-door to 14 homes in Westport.
10. The colonies' first law about branding cattle was passed in Connecticut.
In 1644, Connecticut passed a law that all livestock owners needed to mark the ears or brand their cattle, sheep, and swine that were over 6 months of age.
