Colfax Avenue in Colorado is one of the most important and interesting streets in our entire nation. Part of the reason for that is the fact that not only is it one of Denver's main thoroughfares, but it's also the longest continuous commercial street in the country. The commercial portion of Colfax Avenue is 26.5 miles long and passes through Aurora, Denver, Lakewood, and Golden. It extends even more to the east to Strasburg, and if you count all that part, too - its over 53 miles long.
As you can imagine, Colfax Avenue has a lot of different sections with vibes and atmospheres that are completely different from one another - but it's the same street all the way! I love driving along Colfax, walking along Colfax, people watching on Colfax, and checking out all the old buildings on Colfax. There's always something new to see! Colfax Avenue, also known as US Route 40, is so special, historic, and interesting.
It cuts right through the city of Denver and reaches all the way to the Rocky Mountains in Golden. It stands out on any map of the area, just like it stands out in this picture.
Some sections are fast-moving and are highway-like.
But most of it is walkable and is filled with stores, restaurants, bars, businesses, hotels, music venues, offices, and even a few homes and apartment buildings mixed in.
It passes right by important Denver buildings like the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the State Capitol Building.
Some parts of Colfax Avenue are quite lively. The people watching on Colfax is top-notch. The unique vibe of Colfax Avenue is well-known by anyone who knows Denver.
East of Broadway, you'll find lots of restaurants, bars, and concert venues. As you continue to head east toward Strasburg, you'll pass through a variety of different neighborhoods. You'll eventually find yourself on the rural plains.
West of I-25, you'll find plenty of hotels and historic buildings along with a wide variety of other businesses. In this direction, Colfax Avenue continues is tightly packed with stores and more all the way to its termination in Golden.
All along Colfax Avenue, though, you'll find some incredible street art. All the cities and neighborhoods that Colfax passes through are dedicated to constant redevelopment of this important thoroughfare.
