If you've done any sort of traveling outside of Northern California, you've probably heard words and phrases from other parts of the country that leave you scratching your head. Sure, we've got our own quirks in this part of the country, but people who live in other states sometimes say things that we just have to correct.
1. "The Five"
Our neighbors down in Southern California refer to all highways and roads by stating "the" and then the number. That frustrates us to no end up here in Nor Cal, where we would call this same stretch of highway Interstate 5, or just I-5 for short.
2. Snow Ball
No no no... this, my friends, is a sno-cone.
3. Crayfish and Crawfish
I never understood this one. This is clearly not a fish! Look at those claws and lack of gills. We call these crawdads.
4. "Warrrsh up for supper."
My grandfather, who was born outside of Northern California, used to always say this to me. Grandpa, in Nor Cal, I'll "WASH up for dinner," thank you very much.
5. Sneakers
When I go for a run I wear running shoes. Or if I am going to the gym, I'll wear gym shoes. I don't know where the word sneakers comes from.
6. Catacorner or cornerways
This looks like a kitty corner to those of us in Northern California.
7. Pillow pronounced "Pellow"
Where does this even come from? Last time I checked, pillow was spelled with an I, not an E.
8. Slippers
This is what our friends in Hawaii call this type of sandal, but here in Northern California we call them by how they sound, Flip Flops. (And I cringe every time I hear someone call them thongs.)
9. Washeroo
I recently played this game at a wedding with some out of state guests. No! It's Cornhole and always will be.
10. Loose Meat or Tavern Sandwich
Ew, no. Most Northern Californians were raised eating these and calling them sloppy joes.
11. Clicker
In Northern California this one does tend to vary, but most of us refer to these as a remote control.
12. Wolf pronounced as "wuff"
Wuff is the sound that a itty bitty family dog makes when he's begging for treats. It's doesn't do justice to this powerful wild animal.
