For those fortunate enough to hail from Northern California, there are some images that every local will immediately recognize. Northern California is well known for its beautiful cities and stunning nature, but locals seem to frequent the same spots over and over. Even if you’re new to the state, we think you’ll recognize some of these Northern California photos.
1. Lake Tahoe's Kings Beach
Everyone knows about Kings Beach. Packed in the summertime, this sandy beach on the north side of Lake Tahoe is free to visitors. It’s a great beach for kids since the water is shallow. It’s also within a short walk from numerous restaurants and things to do, including a pizzeria, a sushi restaurant, and even a mini golf course.
2. View of Bixby Creek Bridge from Highway 1
This iconic view of Bixby Creek Bridge is a California must-see. Driving south on Highway 1 from Monterey to Big Sur, you'll come across this scene. Whether you grew up in this state, or moved here later in life, at some point everyone drives along Highway 1 and sees this incredible site. The towering bridge next to the bright blue water and rocky cliffs covered in greenery feels straight out of a painting. There are small areas along Highway 1 where you can pull over to stretch your legs, admire the view, and snap some photos. Right before you reach the bridge there is a pull-over spot where you can stop.
3. Blue Angels
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels perform a choreographed airshow over San Francisco Bay. They perform every October as part of the San Francisco Fleet Week celebration. San Franciscans get outside for a picnic or rooftop party to view this show, which includes a commercial airplane, the United 777. Tons of people from around the state visit San Francisco for this fun-filled event. Additionally, San Francisco typically sees the sunniest weather in October, making this an ideal time to experience the city.
4. Yosemite Valley
You don’t have to be from Northern California to recognize Yosemite. For locals, we feel grateful that this incredible destination that people travel from across the world to visit is only a few hours' drive away.
5. Driving to Sonoma on California Route 37
This road overlooks the San Pablo Bay and the Napa Sonoma Marsh. With a view of San Francisco on a clear day, this Bay Area road is a visual reminder that vast wildlife, as well as agricultural lands, exists right outside the city. And anyone who has taken a day trip to wine country will have seen this road at some point.
6. Cal Expo
The California Exposition and State Fair (Cal Expo) is where the California State Fair and other annual attractions are held. Events at Cal Expo include the International Wedding, Sacramento Reptile Show, and more! Don’t miss the Light Up The Night event in December.

They elicit memories of fun summers visiting the California State Fair, long drives down the coast, and unforgettable trips to the always beautiful Yosemite National Park.
