A creamy, dreamy orange delight, the Orange Julius has been an American classic drink since the late 1920s. Did you know it was invented right in Los Angeles? That’s right, it all started at an orange juice stand with a man named Julius Freed - and as they say, the rest is history!
Today, we know the Orange Julius as a popular smoothie chain that’s owned by Dairy Queen. You can typically find both together at a joint stand or storefront, and the iconic orange sign makes it easy to recognize, even from far away.
Orange Julius started from humble beginnings. It first began as an orange juice stand in Los Angeles that only brought in $20 of sales per day. Soon, all of that would change with the invention of the new drink.
The original Orange Julius recipe used fresh orange juice for a refreshing citrus flavor. Julius Freed invented the drink because regular orange juice was too acidic on his stomach, and he needed something that was easier for him to drink.
What’s was the secret ingredient in the recipe? He originally blended together milk, egg whites, sugar, and vanilla with fresh orange juice and ice to create the creamy, frothy drink that we know and love today.
After Julius introduced his new drink to customers, sales increased to $100 per day. This newfound popularity eventually led to the Orange Julius chain that we know today.
By the 1950s and 1960s, Orange Julius drinks were sold around the country, including state and county fairs. Now, the well-known treat remains a favorite amongst many to either make at home or buy from the popular chain.

Since long before Spanish exploration, what is now called Dublin has been known as a crossroads of the Bay Area, with important road connections running east, west, north, and south. Native American traders and hunters, migrating families, prospectors looking for gold, ranchers and farmers, commuters, and military convoys have passed through Dublin over the years, but suburban development didn’t really start until the early 1960s.
When the city was incorporated in 1982, the population was some 14,000, growing to over 70,000 by 2020, with the biggest boom taking place in the last decade. With populations of close to eight million in San Francisco and nearly a million in San Jose, Dublin is still a small city with a suburban feel and city perks.
One of California’s fastest-growing cities, Dublin is considered one of the best in the state to live in. In addition to fairly new housing developments and great schools, Dublin has a lot to offer families in the form of a highly-rated school district, easy access to public transportation, a wonderful public library, and more. It also happens to be at the crossroads of two major highways, making it easy for commuters and travelers to reach surrounding cities.

Let’s not forget about recreation. Dublin has sports facilities and public parks, golf courses, a state-of-the-art movie theater, and plenty of shopping. Dublin Wave is a huge waterpark and aquatic center with an indoor pool for year-round fun. And, unlike the bigger cities, Dublin provides a wild escape for nature lovers — about 650 acres of undeveloped land and trails at the Dublin Hills Regional Park.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
