Typically, we try to avoid going round in circles. However, there are exceptions to every rule – and in this case, the exception is the Arkansas Carousel! Much more than a classic ride, though, the carousel is incredibly unique. It’s the only one of its kind in the world!
Encompassing more than 33 acres, Little Rock Zoo is home to over 500 animals and lots of attractions, including the Arkansas Carousel.
Also known as Over-The-Jumps Carousel, it was moved to the zoo in 2007 – but not before being completely restored.
The carousel was an Arkansas landmark long before it was moved to the zoo, though. It’s been a part of the state since 1924, when it was exhibited at the Arkansas State Fair.
Built in the 1920s by the Herschell-Spillman Corporation in New York, it's a priceless antique.
The carousel isn’t just old, though. It’s rare, too.
According to the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum, less than 10 “over-the-jumps” carousels were created. Today, the Arkansas Carousel is the only one still running.
In 1942, a Little Rock resident bought the carousel, saving it from destruction. Several decades later, in 1991, Arkansas was again in danger of losing the carousel, this time, to out-of-state buyers, including some as far away as England!
Luckily, though, locals got together and formed the Friends of the Carousel group. The group collected enough money to buy the antique carousel and keep it right here in Arkansas.
